Those who aren't happy either had some misfortune that was out of their control or they didn't do enough homework before coming. You'd have to be clinically insane to come to Canada and find it "bad".
As many people on this forum who are recent immigrants know, the 'perfect' new life that you had built up in your mind doesn't just fall into your lap. In the 'pecking order' of things new immigrants have to establish themselves and, I suppose, earn their place in life here. You could of course lead the life of a hermit and not worry about interacting with anyone or anything so that wouldn't be a problem. |

You keep moaning on and on about service histories on cars and yes, it is too much to ask for because that is not the way we do things here. Dealers do not provide service histories - deal with it. If you don't like that fact, buy privately and demand a service history from the previous owner. Otherwise, just don't buy a bloody car.
If you want things exactly as they are in Britain perhaps you should stay in Britain as you'll obviously be happier there. We get along perfectly fine here without doing things exactly as they are in Britain (I would actually argue that we do a lot better here) so don't come here demanding that we do things your way - you have adjust to our way of doing things and if you don't like it, tough! And no, you do not have to pay $20K for a decent used car. The last one I bought was a 2002 Ford Taurus from Dixie Ford which I purchased in December 2007 or January 2008 (pictured below - and no, that is not rust at the bottom of the driver's door, it is dirt and mud because of the weather when I bought it) back when I was in grad school. I paid less than $10K for that car (on the road for that price) but, according to you, used cars here are all deathtraps and one has to pay $20K for a decent used car. Right.....sure we do. http://imageshack.us/a/img27/1381/grwb.jpg Oh how cute, you're playing internet tough guy now. |

Hi guys
reading everyones post comparing the cost of living from Canada to the UK, I find it quite surprising and think it depends on circumstances also... for example my husband has been offered work in Edmonton start pay is alot more than uk wages ... in £'s he earns £8.20 per hour here (skilled trade) been offered £20.10 per hour in edmonton... :) the cost of living for us in uk (RIGHT NOW) is ridiculos we have 2 children.. my son is 12 his school uniform alone... will cost me £200 just for him to go back to school in september!! fuel (diesel) £1.43 a litre (cant afford to travel very far) Food shopping costs me £100 + a week just for basics.. Bills over £100 a month... to rent our house and council tax £900 a month and thats before we can do anything ... which believe me isnt very often... life is very hard, and will only get worse... if we stay in uk... Unless your well off.... for us Edmonton is a chance to live... better quality of life all round.. so arguing over the price of milk? cheese? really? for us its the bigger package ... all in... so much out door living... a chance for a better quality of life... yes im sure things can cost more... same here.. cherries for example ... I cant afford to buy them full stop! because after all the everyday things are paid there is nothing much left... We are excited and scared about the future but overall its a FUTURE something we dont have much of here.... |

I missed your post lyn1972 (until now) but I tend to agree with bats. Britain can be expensive, but as many on this forum will attest to, so can Canada. Edmonton is generally more affordable than some other centres (Vancouver, Toronto) but it would be good to not "over-expect" on your lifestyle gain in the short term. School uniforms can be pricey in the UK, for example, Butfashionable and new clothes become a necessity at the start of year in Canada. Gas is cheaper in Canada, engine sizes and typical mileage is higher. It really is much of a muchness. Having said that, if you can get good work in Alberta and build a new life there you have much to gain. |

Anybody who moves here and thinks it is immediately great is young and inexperienced (and I'm jealous) or very naive. It can be good if you want it to be...but it won't be easy! Best of luck |

I don't agree on that point, the Canadian national pastime seems to me to be getting your family member who lives in the US to send you something to save a couple of dollars. Or buying a tank of gas to drive to the US, stay overnight in a hotel so you can save a few dollars on shopping in the US.
My point was more along the lines of complaining but never changing anything. A perfect example is the liquor laws in ontario. The whole idea dates back to the post prohibition era but it's the year 2013 and I have to go to the government run shops to buy booze. Only recently are these shops open on sundays or extended hours before holidays so people can stock up. Or the Beer Store which is privately owned by the big boy beer companies which means you are hard pressed to find any craft beers. What do people do? Nothing. They continue paying the prices or drive to the US if they want decently priced booze or a good selection of craft beer. |

Coming over 'cold' with a work permit and zero experience of Canada can be challenging and a shock culturally, financially and climate wise. Even with research, you cannot know a place until you live in it - and having expectations that are too high can be the downfall. Being realistic, acknowledging that life may be different and difficult at times and being open to change are key elements to having a successful transition. The grass isn't necessarily greener - it just might look nicer from a distance! :) |

I was surprised at how many knackered cars there are on the roads in Ontario (the same goes for New York State - I saw a Ford Explorer in Top's car park where the frames were so corroded that the thing would have folded like concertina in a shunt). How is this possible? Every car in Ontario is required to pass an Emission test every two years. Tests are not performed and licences are not renewed if the car is unsafe to test i.e excessive rust, defective brakes, leaking fluids, visible exhaust smoke, etc. I would support a more stringent safety test as it appears to be necessary in the UK as safety should be more important than the emission test which has an extremely high pass rate. |
