Why Canada?
Just out of interest, what made you choose Canada?
I guess this is a question to those that didn't have a specific reason to move there such as a spouse or job offer. |
Re: Why Canada?
A better life for the kids............ Well someone had to say it!!

Re: Why Canada?
I killed a few people in Texas. As Texas is a death penalty state I knew that Canada would not extradite me to face "the chair". Therefore Canada seemed like a better choice than, say, Mexico.

Re: Why Canada?
Got the opportunity and decided I'd regret it if I didn't try...

Re: Why Canada?
I got seconded and now trying to make the best out of rather distasteful situation. At least it's not Eastern Europe.

Re: Why Canada?
Canada chose me by way of the ex wife being Canadian. Then I stayed, then went back to the US, then back to Canada.
I honestly had no thought, desire or interest of immigrating. Just kind of happens sometimes. |
Re: Why Canada?
Did it to p*ss my ex off...well a little bit. Was going to join him in Toronto but he decided he wanted someone else, so I went on vacation to Vancouver, liked it and decided to apply for working holiday visa and I'm still here now...waiting to hear if I can make it my home permenantly :)

Re: Why Canada?
The wife's name starts with a C so for her it was either Canada, China, Chile or Cambodia.
I would've preferred the Caymans. |

Re: Why Canada?
Came here for 9 months on a university exchange as a 19 year old back in 2009. A year later I dropped out of university (I was doing totally the wrong course) and came back to work as a nanny for two years on the IEC visa. At the start of my second year I met my now husband who is sponsoring me for permanent residence. We haven't said that Canada will be where we stay "for good" but for now it makes most sense for us to be here.

Czech Republic would have been an easy choice immigration wise
Central African Republic or Congo would have been a thought but she'd been to Africa before. |

Re: Why Canada?
I really liked Vancouver and was relieved to find both good ale and passable cider there, as well as a decent climate (it was xmas when I went there) and excellent skiing.
So I moved to Toronto. Eh? |
Re: Why Canada?
An ex who I was going to get PR through. I went ahead and got it on my own anyway.

Re: Why Canada?
Canada sort of just happened, just like the US did 30+ years ago. The move from Noway to the US back in the day was because of my US Citizen and now ex wife.
The move to Canada was job related, as the team I was heading up in New York was being relocated to Montreal, and I was offered the opportunity to relocate. Since my current wife and I had been discussing getting out of New Jersey for a while anyway, we accepted the opportunity. Been here for a year now, and don't regret it one bit. We are just starting to look into the different avenues to Permanent Residence now. |
Re: Why Canada?
Wanted to start a new life, due to personal reasons, wanted to get away from.... believe it it or not......too many good memories in UK, (which i knew i would never be able to relive).
I had really enjoyed vacations in Canada in the past, so decided to make it permanent, it suits my lifestyle way more than the UK does, i get to do things i could only dream of doing back there. And the "kids" never featured once in the equation! lol |

Some interesting answers :)

Re: Why Canada?
Many things: primarily the surroundings (I'm referring to BC), a culture that embraces the arts a bit more, generally a more positive attitude. I'm not saying everything is better (because I don't think it is), but quite a few things that are important to me personally are better. Where you live and whether it makes you happy is something that very much changes from individual to individual....what one person hates, another one loves, and vice versa. Since early childhood I had a fascination with Canada and I have no idea where it came from. We chose Canada for our honeymoon thinking it would be a one-off, only to find ourselves returning every year for 8 years. No other destination we looked at seemed to tick all our boxes. We move in August after a stressful, drawn out 4 year long immigration process - we have entered via the self-employed/business route, so when we land we will find ourselves with no home and no job!

Re: Why Canada?
The weather resembled London, and the housing prices were cheaper back then (in 92' when we first relocated ourselves to Whiterock, BC.)

Re: Why Canada?
I was offered a place to study here, and here I am. It's been a brilliant opportunity.

Re: Why Canada?
i was a somewhat trailing spouse at the time, ex was born here, wanted to move back. I thought I'd give it a go. Canada was never on my list of places I'd like to visit/live ;). I was actually ruminating about Morocco at the time ...
I applied for & got PR via QSW under my own steam, and here I am. Still. Seriously considered leaving several times, & actually did once (with daughter in tow), but came back rather fast as daughter mutinied. |

One of the best things the place has to offer. In fact we just got back tonight from our sushi place that I think has the best sushi chef in Vancouver.
