Default WHSmith & Rayman equivalent

hi. i will be in Canada in 4 months time and i'm looking for a shop which is equivalent to WHSmith & Rayman wherein i can mainly buy anything from pens to stationary to calendars,etc.

Try Chapters or Coles book store....you'll also find places like Walmart and Zellers sell stationary

i've heard of Staples. are they any good?

Yes...you can go online and check them out, it might give you a better idea of what they sell

Staples, Office Depot & Grand & Toy are all large companies in the office stationery market. But WalMart, SuperStore etc sell quite a bit as well.
