Whistler for a weekend? Budget....
Just wondering how much money you need for whistler for a weekend in regards to slope pass, hotel, food etc. I've been told it very very expensive and locals go to other areas like cypress, fernie etc
Are there any hostels in the whistler area for cheaper accommodation?

Re: Whistler for a weekend? Budget....
Hotels in Whistler can be pricey, they really are not meant for the budget traveler, most are on the more upscale side and less on the budget side.
But there are some hostels-

The other alternative if you have a car is to stay in Squamish and commute to the resort for skiing which is what some do who don't want to stay in a hostel and can't afford hotels in Whistler or don't want to pay the high rates of Whistler.
Checking priceline for today, hotels in Whistler are starting at 100/night which is low compared to some years, but I hear some of the hotels are struggling to fill rooms this winter.

There are lots of short term house rentals for Whistler, but in season these are not cheap either. Stay outside of Whistler and travel in is a cheaper option.

Locals go to Cyrpus, Seymour and Grouse, often because one can go for the afternoon. Fernie is nowhere near Vancouver, it is a 6-8 hour drive, it is closer to Calgary, and Bannff. Big White and Apex are closer, still a 3-5 hour drive.

It's Cypress, not Cyprus.
The secret is to join a group of friends and rent a condo or townhouse. When you stay long enough in Vancouver, sooner or later you know someone who knows someone who owns property in Whistler, and then that's how you do it affordably.
With the UBC Ski & Snowboard club, I do not believe you need to be a student. I have friends who are not UBC students who have joined the UBC Surf Club, and they travel all over the west coast on surf trips, sharing travel costs and so on. I imagine the UBC Ski/Snowboard club is the same.
Grouse, Cypress, Seymour have night skiing, so people can go skiing after work.
Whistler is the logical weekend getaway, but as others have said, Sun Peaks and Silver Star are also long weekend getaways if you're willing to make the trek. There's also Mount Baker in nearby Washington state, Manning Park a 3 hour drive east of Vancouver, and a few smaller ski hills in the Fraser Valley by Harrison Hot Springs, though I forget the name.
Revelstoke, Whitewater, Fernie - all excellent resorts in the Kootenay Rockies, but much too far from Vancouver for a quick jaunt.
www.skiittobelieveit.com might be worth scouting for deals.

If you are a Canadian (or Washington State) resident you can get an Edge Card which is cheaper than the normal lift passes plus you get discounts on accommodation and in the shops.

It used to be only BC residents, but now looks like open to everyone.
Have fun!
