The only way in which the school could be considered dreadful is in terms of sporting facilities, the school had no arena so they played iced hockey at Moss Park. Standing outside Moss Park at 5am having a smoke while they revolved and hit each other with sticks was an elightening experience.

Otherwise, ib program, cramming classes for the US SATs, hookers on the doorstep at dawn, a stone's throw from Filmore's, a very educational establishment in every sense.

OK, so I don't know which school specifically you're talking about here, but both Lord Dufferin and Jarvis Collegiate are exceedingly rough. That's not to say that some kids won't do well there - I went to a very rough inner city school in the UK myself and came out sort of alright - but it's not a choice that most parents would make assuming some better alternatives were available (e.g. Leaside High School).

It also occurs to me that no-one has mentioned Riverdale. That has some nice housing, a reasonable commute to downtown and Riverdale Collegiate is a decent, although not top ranked, school.

I know someone who went there, he'd be 30ish now. He was one of three non-Asian children in his year. He's a ginger!

Interesting, I think the demographic must have changed a fair bit over the last few years then. Just from observing the kids going in and out - I cycle past it most days - I'd say it's much less Asian now. The same is true of Jarvis Collegiate from what people have told me. It had a lot of Chinese kids at one point but doesn't now apparently.

Dear All,

Thank you so much for your replies. They are really really helpful, and specifically the link to the thread "How much do you spend?" is really helpful in terms of making a more detaled budget, which I plan to to today :p
