You most likely made up your mind about this post after reading the first line so failed to read the part that says "However there are some exceptions" on line 2.
I was refering to the areas closer to downtown on the transit routes (dover, forest lawn). Sorry to upset you A.C.

You didn't upset me, I live in the SW. I would say that the areas of low income are the exception, not the other way around.

Cool Re: where to live in Calgary

i would avoid the NE, generally.
SW and SE and nice areas, but may not be for you.
some people prefer to live in Okotoks, Cochrane, Airdrie etc.....
bottom line is you wont know until you are here and can see for yourself!
set yourself up with some short term accommodation and go hunting! its great fun.

I agree, you need to look around to see what feels right for you. Some areas and towns we looked at we didn't like personally but then know people who do live in these areas and love it. It all comes down to personal choice.

We've never lived in a city and didn't want to start doing so when we moved over. My husband is also in Calgary Police. We chose to live in Cochrane which we absolutely love. Certainly has the community thing going on. Granted, the hospitals are not on your doorstep here but it certainly has lots of stuff going on for kids. The commute to Calgary is good too. My husband works in the North East, near the airport, and it only takes him about half an hour. You're also on the right side of Calgary so far as access to the mountains are concerned!

If I help you further on info re Cochrane, please ask. All the best and hope you find somewhere you really like.

The South-West has great access to the main trails into downtown and within easy reach of the malls and superstores.

I lived in an area called Bridgeland which is a nice area closer to downtown but would be more limited for schooling and family sized housing.

As someone higher up in this post mentioned Okotoks is a nice family area a bit further South (approx 45km) so that may be worth considering if you don't mind longer commutes.

Jeez......what a generalized and inaccurate load of crap.

I live in Chaparral and what I wanted to say has been covered.

Being in Calgary I understand what you are getting at but people in the UK wont. Your generalisation (with exceptions) could exclude some really great areas from peoples research and gives an inaccurate impression of SE Calgary - Chaparral (Lake Community),Cranston,Walden,Auburn Bay(Lake Community), Mackenzie Lake, McKenzie Town, Midnapore (Lake Community), Lake Bonavista, Diamond Cove, Copperfield, New Brighton, Sundance (Lake Community) - to name a few, are all great areas which are certainly not low income.

I would just suggest caution in the language of your posts.

If you go onto www.rentfaster.ca there are some short term listings available, I know this may be a drain on the finances but it would certainly give some space to explore and find where you want to settle. Depending on what you can afford there are some great houses (you pay for what you get). There is a listing in cochrane for 2 to 3 months starting from April 01. I know you not going till May, but it may be worth a call and negotiate, just an idea anyway. By the way the house in nice and the listing I.D. is 49135 just type this number in the keywords box. Good luck to your family I hope it all works out fine.
