and is it decent by BC high standards?
I like Victoria, however 3 or 4 hours to Mount Washington is a bit too far.... unless I've done crap research which I'm hoping I have

Nope looks like your research is pretty good ...... I'd say about 3 & a half hours from Victoria is about right

I don't ski so I am just going by received opinion.
From Maple Ridge you have Hemlock Valley about an hour to the East. Not the best resort around but it is often quieter so no huge line ups for the lifts.
There are two ski hills/resorts in North Vancouver and one in West Vancouver. These are easily in reach within an hour from Maple Ridge if you are driving outside rush hour. It is not Whistler, but all three have a pretty good reputation. Cypress for the thrills, Grouse for the views.

Hi
Mount Baker in Washington state, not that far from Maple Ridge.
I don't ski so I am just going by received opinion.

Mount Baker within an hour is pushing it, even if there is no lineup at the border. And, if you are prepared to drive a bit more than an hour there is also Manning Park.

Yeah Manning PArk is nice - but a good 2 hour drive from Vancouver. .
