Re: where in canada plz??
Hi, we are in Alberta, lovely place, close to the Rockies, BC and the US border, the city is nice and not too big, bit pricey when it comes to houses but everyone is friendly. The winter has been the harshest here for about 15 years,(or so we have been told, not sure if they were pulling our legs), and yes it was cold, down to -40 with a -57 wind chill, but it was only for a week. We have just had 2 weeks non stop rain, but now the sun is shining and temps are right up to 24ish.
I think you need to research Canada a bit more for yourselves to see where you would like to settle, it is too big a country to stick a pin in. I don't regret moving here at all and feel it was def the best move we have ever made as a family, but it is not everyones cup of tea. I would look into the reasons people have gone back to the UK, as coming to either Canada or Oz with rose tinted glassess could make the adjustment extremely hard for you. There is a call for Nurses here, especially in Calgary, and there are some lovely places just outside the city to settle, like Okotoks. I would def do a lot of research to decide where you would like to go. My very best wishes to you, whatever you decide. Lorraine |

kelly:) Dont discount places like Kingston or Ottawa too, the housing costs are more reasonable, but they are stil within easy driving range of the rellies in Toronto. You have to remember that 3 or 4 hours on a straight uncrowded canadian highway is not considered a big deal here... thats why everyone has cruise control:) Everyone is different of course, but I would find the winter in Edmonton too long and cold. Calgary is booming and property prices are sky high. The winter is moderated by the Chinook winds, although it can still be cold late in the year there...the bonus is the mountains on the doorstep. Toronto is a world class city in every respect (no matter what dbd says:) ) If you cant find it there, then you arent looking hard enough...but its crowded and the traffic would drive me nuts. Im happy enough going for the day when I want and living the sleepy small town life, Belleville and Trenton provide me with what I need for most things that I cant get in the local village, and they are a 20 minute drive. |

My stock advice is find the jobs and the city will find you. Without jobs lined up you are looking at an impractically long wait to get into canada.

Are you doing a degree or diploma in nursing as this can effect the area's which you can go. We wanted to go to kingston, ontario but hubby only has diploma and you need a degree for ontario so have choosen Manitoba 's instead. All areas have there plus points so depends on what your after.

I'm curious about the nursing diploma/degree ithing. Is that just for immigrants in Ontario? The college I was at is training RPNs, Registered Practical Nurses, and thats a diploma. So there must be jobs for diploma nurses in Ontario.

Ok now im confused what is the difference between a rn and rpn? Is the pay alot different? We would love to move to Ontario as we have family there but were told that they only accept nurses with degree's. Been on the nursing website and that states that its a 2 year diploma for rpns. I thought I had everything sorted but now i dont know
The College of Nurses of Ontario has this info that says your international program may be accepted as degree equivalent if you have studied the required subjects. http://www.cno.org/international_en/..._edu/index.htm this section gives info about bridging courses http://www.cno.org/international_en/...u/bridging.htm Also try here http://www.healthforceontario.ca/Jobs/AccessCentre.aspx Health Force Ontario has a section to help internationally trained applicants. Another option would be to retrain as a physician's assistant. There's a new program at McMaster in Hamilton starting?? |

Here is the link below. http://allnurses.com/forums/f108/ RPNs in Ontario is quite similar to SEN in UK. Whereas RPNs in the Western Provinces are Registered Psychiatric Nurses which are equal to the RNs in the Mental Health areas except that are restrictions on some medical procedures that they are allowed to perform. All the best. Yoong |

A highly trained Nurse friend of ours with high level quals had to re take all her qualifications to meet Canadian standards and it took her a fair wee while and was stressful for her. |
Re: where in canada plz??
hi, never posted on this forum before as it has always been the australian one.In nov 05 my husband, myself and 4 children moved to melbourne, oz, but OH couldn't find work so we moved to a place called Butler north of Perth. (He's a bricklayer)Things are different than you expect and as beautiful as it is we do still miss little things such as cold xmas's and the history, family coming over to visit as its too far for them to travel and the prices are so expensive from the uk. Also if you want to fly anywhere from here the airfares are so high. For 2ad 4ch to oz-uk yr talking $10,000 and then u need spending money. Food is also expensive and nearly everything shuts at 6pm, its like a ghost town. We are getting itchy feet again and are also thinking of moving to canada but like you we haven't got a clue. We have friends in Nelson but so many people say its so far out and isolated and we feel that here. We won't make any rash decisions as yet but we are gonna look into it. there are so many people we meet who are going back to the uk, its scary. I know i won't go bk there but at the end of the day try and make the right decision as you have kids, its taken a long time for ours to settle in, if you need more info just ask. Good luck. Pls keep me posted on yr decison. nat.
