We stayed at one of those 'self catering' motels for a couple of weeks. Bloody awful experience but they did have XXX cable so it wasn't all bad.

First night in a hotel then straight into a basement apartment for 4 months before finding and buying a house. I had the advantage of the Mrs having moved back home some months previously who organised said rental though.
We have a Kenmore (sears) fridge. It has a stainless steel door to which magnets do not stick. The sides though are magnet friendly. Which is a relief.

Having been living in Vancouver for the past 30+ years, I have never seen a fridge here that is NOT covered in magnets. If you found a fridge where magnets aren't sticking, I would argue that's the abnormality, not necessarily a Canadianism.
Back to the original topic, you might also want to consider renting an apartment or suite via AirBnB, as an alternative.

Can I put this issue to bed? (And I have to admit that, although I'm a physical chemist, this was news to me), but here is the definitive answer to the Mystery of Magnetophobic refrigerators:

....So I started reading it and then it turned into gobbledygook... But I'm very glad someone has taken this very serious "Canadian" problem and come up with a reason (even if I don't understand what it is) !
Apologies to Eddmac and Lychee for derailing again....

Eddmac, I think there are a number here who have moved and been faced with a bit of a dilemma for the first few weeks, if you have children or pets it can be a bit more trying. The whole thought of the 'this time next year I'll be on a different continent with a new home, job and friends'....is very scary, but if you mentally break it down into doable bits...'sell house, buy tickets, arrange for removals' it all starts to make more sense. We got here...relatively sane....I'm sure you can too...best of luck
