If tipping was not the norm, would the servers be as invested in getting you the right food at the right temperature in the right timeframe? Customer service over here seems to be rather better than I remember it in the UK. Perhaps the expectation that service level will affect tip level is the reason. |

It's a good point about service in Canada being better than in the UK and i couldn't agree more. so i guess tipping does increase overall customer service. i still find it hard to see why there is such an emphasis put on it in certian industries and none in others. Why is it the done thing to tip a taxi driver but not the bus driver, air stewardess or cashier in a retail shop. |

Just had to add my 15%-18% worth. I tip on the basis of the food cost, I don't tip on the !3%+ tax charged for GST/PST more on booze. Also I don't tip the full wack on the wine, the restaurant has already marked it up at least 100%, so I'm not going to tip $8.00 for a $40.00 of wine. |

Never tip when its included in the bill. Also find going out to different places and not being a regular a great way to avoid the expectation of paying someone for doing their job.
Wish I could make multiples of my salary for helping customers solve problems. |
