When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
This is aimed at people living in Canada.
Do you : A) Say you are from (somewhere in ) the Uk and now live in Canada. B) Say you are from (somewhere in) Canda and originally came from the UK C) Say where you live in Canada Also would it depend if a fellow Expat was asking as opposed to a Canadian, and do you ever stop converting prices back in to sterling? |

London.
If people look confused I say "London, London". |

people are only usually asking 'where are you from?' cos they want to know where your accent is from. I get asked nearly every day and I say 'Scotland originally but I'm from here now.' I also don't think people are listening to what i say cos when I'm finished talking all they say is 'I love your accent'.
Stopped converting to pounds months ago but sometimes i convert just to work out if it's value for money. |

Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
Freud said there are No accidents.
A freudien slip is when you type one thing and mean your mother..erm, an other ;) Answer to question for me depends who Im talking to and what mood Im in. If Im mischeivous then I'll say where I live now and look at them like , why are you asking? Otherwise my UK history is so mixed up I just say "All over the place in England" if its obvious they are going along the "Do you know Fred, he lives in England" path. Occasionally you meet locals who lived in the UK and actually might get something out of a sensible answer. FWIW it took me about a years to stop translating to pounds, and about five till I finaly stopped converting from time to time when I wanted to justify splurging on a non essential toy! |
Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
I say, from Newcastle. Obviously.
|
Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
No, where the Aussies come from.
For some reason the broad 'ampshire 'og mixed with London Estuary slang seems to confuse the 'ell out of 'em. Someone tried to help me learn Spanish the other day, we quickly gave up as I murder English you can imagine how bad the ole toto bien turned out. |
Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
I have an 'orrible Saarf London accent, so I always say London. I am technically from Kent really. I stopped converting £ to $ about three years ago. It depresses me to remind myself what a s*** salary I get paid over here. Ignorance is bliss.... :p

Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
It depends on who is asking. It's not a question I get very often from Francos. I think an awful lot of them can't tell the diference between Canadian English and Brit English and just presume that I'm from Ontario.
As for Anglo Canadians, I normally say originally London or the south of England. If they follow up, I'll explain where Brighton is. I never say I live in Gatineau, unless I'm talking with a Quebecker or an Ottawan. Normally I say I live near Ottawa, on the dark side. |

They just don't get it. Try a few thousand more miles east mate! When talking to 'back home' I convert to sterling, but never when I'm talking here. Been here 2 yrs. |
Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
I always reply "Kelowna', makes people laugh every time, especially friendly smiling checkout clerks and servers, then they say nah I mean originally where you from.
Also great when people assume I'm "just another tourist" and when the servers automatically take away our card for payment thinking it's credit and it turns out to be debit on an RBC card, gets 'em every time. Rich. |

Rich. "No, I'm not enjoying my vacation, I live here" so many people asked. Now were just the crazy Brits who live up the hill. People I've never met come up to me in the store and say "I like your new sunroom/deck/tractor" They don't miss a trick Where ARE you from Rich? |
Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
I was asked my GP (Dr Patel) where he was from originally.
Halifax NS. :o |

Re: When asked where are you from, what do you reply?
If it's a fellow Expat asking, I always say Bedfordshire, If a Canadian asks, I say England for some reason people think I may be Aussie  When further asked I tell them Bedfordshire - when I get a puzzled look I continue with - about an hour north of London, but have lived here a year now. (In fact it was a WHOLE year on the 2nd June - happy anniversary to us!).
One Rednecked mother picked her daughter up from our house actually asked "What are you" (quite rudley) I just wish I had had the presence of mind to reply "Human - what are you?" :D The fact that I have only been here a year means I am still very English sounding, more so than my hubby and daughter, it is obvious that I hail from further afield than Red Deer. In 20 years my answer will probably be different :D |

As for converting dollars to sterling, I'm afraid we do occasionally, even after 18 months. When we lived here years ago, we were told the trick is to calculate the number of hours you have to work to buy something - that'll tell you whether or not it's good value. That was great back then - this time around we've retired, so still tend to do the conversion bit. |
