Re: whats the weather like in oct/nov in nova scotia
A snow storm is usually the result of the warm air associated with an extratropical cyclone flowing up and over the cold air surrounding part of the cyclone. The air being lifted, combined with the abundant water vapor available in the warm air mass, causes cloud water to keep forming. This cloud water is collected by falling ice particles, which grow as the super-cooled cloud water freezes. The ice particles in the clouds grow and combine to become so large that upward flowing air (updrafts) in the clouds can no longer support them, and they fall to the ground. The more water vapor there is available to the cloud, and the stronger the updrafts that cause this water vapor to condense into cloud water or ice particles, the more likely it is that snow will form within the cloud. A cold, cloudy day with no snow indicates that there is either not enough water vapor available to the cloud, or that the rising motion creating the cloud is not enough to cause snow (or both). (Even at temperatures as low as -40 degrees F, tiny cloud water droplets remain liquid, until they become attached to an ice particle, and then they freeze.) Snow can also form from very cold air flowing over a large ice-free lake, a situation called lake effect snow.

I have heard that buying winter clothing is reasonable in Canada compared to UK

If you arrive in October/November, you'll manage with your UK gear for a couple of days, until you can get to a local store and get yourself kitted out.
Marks Work Wearhouse is a good store for cold weather outdoor clothing. They sell decent quality merchandise at fair prices. There are many branches in Nova Scotia.
The same can be said of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). The once-in-a-lifetime membership fee of $5 is one of the best investments you can make. However, there is only one branch of MEC in Nova Scotia, and it's in Halifax.
I've only told you about nationally known stores. There could well be local / regional stores in the Maritime Provinces that I don't know about.

Don't only pack your winter warmers. I was there mid October last year and it was t-shirt weather all week. Temps were low to mid 20-'s but it got a bit chilly some nights (only light jumper and jacket chilly - not fleece and gortex chilly).
It will be colder in November so I would suggest that layers are the order of the day.
BTW NS was really beautiful in October, the colours were spectacular. A fabulous time to arrive.

We moved to Moncton, NB in summer 2005. I can remember October through to early November was actually pretty warm.
I may be wrong but I wouldn't have thought NS would be that different. Is it?

Don't bother buying winter clothing in the UK. There's a larger market for proper winter clothing in Canada, so it's cheaper here.
