Hi all,

I suffer really bad with Hayfever and for most of the year and was wondering what the pollen counts are like in the Halifax area and suburbs?

Does anyone else get Hayfever in the UK but finds it worse in NS?

I don't want to move somewhere where i am miserable for most of the year because i can't stop sneezing!!!!

Thanks

Hi - in the UK I suffer with hayfever and other allergies which means I am forced to take antihistamines every day of the year! I spent 3 weeks in NS in August and didn't take any tablets - the air quality felt so much better. This included our time in Halifax - but we did spend the majority of the time along the South shore. I'd guess that you certainly wouldn't feel any worse in NS!

If you find beclomethasone nasal sprays helpful. bring as many as you can cos you cant buy it in canada.

In manitoba I have found asthma to be much improved versus the UK, hayfever generally better, but nasal conjestion dreadful all year - I suspect due the the blown air heating in most places

We have been here since last August and where I suffered terribly with hay fever in the UK I have had no symptoms at all since I moved here. I am yet to see what early summer will bring.

In addition, my 14 year old son had quite bad excema in the UK and has used creams including steriod creams daily all of his life. After a month in NS it completely cleared and he had not used any creams at all since September last year.

Our daughter has always suffered badly with hayfever, and it has been no better since she's been in Nova Scotia. She is battling at the moment, as it's suddenly warmed up. There are lots of different medication to choose from at the pharmacy - she is finding Drixoral spray helps at the moment. Not sure if it's just our GP, but they seem reluctant to prescribe medication for hayfever here, so it can get quite costly having to buy from the pharmacy.

I suffered from early hay fever in the UK Tree pollen I think, since moving here ive been symtom free. Guess it depends on the pollen you are allergic too, and if they have that pollen over here.

My OH and son both suffered quite severe hay fever in the UK, we live south shore'ish (St Margaret's Bay) and they both have zero symptoms. I think the difference is we are surrounded by trees, there is not much grass or agriculture. However, I have noticed that the more allergy prone kids around here suffer from birch allergies, I'm not sure if this is pollen or sap related but it is a new one on me, so I am waiting to see if my allergy prone duo develop a reaction to birch.

Interesting. My hay fever was always made worse by birch pollen in the UK but I have no symptoms here so far.

Many people in the UK are finding that their allergies are more related to pollutants than pollens. Maybe the open space and clean air here are all that is takes to reduce the symptoms.
