Re: whats Hamilton like, please
If you see one try and get a snap if it - you can send the photo with all the details (time/date/location) to environment or parks Canada as they constantly seek such info :).

Re: whats Hamilton like, please
My aunt lives there and I have visited a few times, although we prefer other places, I found the people of Hamilton to be the friendliest and most genuine out of all the places we have visited and people we had met.

Yep - it was in our local paper the day after we saw it - so if we spot it again, we will do our civic duty!!! |

Probably Ancaster is the best place close to Hamilton. The town of Dundas is also okay.

Re: whats Hamilton like, please
Ancaster is nice, it's also one of the wealthiest communities in Canada. If you have money you would fit in fine. The original poster was looking for an area that is walkable, Ancaster is fairly spread out with many large estates, and not walkable at all. Dundas is just as nice (and less snobby) but very walkable. The Westdale area of Hamilton is also beautiful and walkable, with a nice commercial district.
Also, Hamilton's crime rate is on the low side as far as Canadian cities go, and all Canadian cities have low crime rates. I essentially never think of crime at all. |

Your right Hamilton does have nice spots, Hess Village is a great place to eat and party in the summer, Barangas at the beach again the same right on the lake, Confed park is nice to go chill aswell with a decentish waterpark and your right it has a good arts scene and defo way cheaper real estate than Burl to TO, although the botanical gardens are actually classed as being in Burlington as they just over the border.
Again its horses for courses, fits for some not for others, personally you get all the above and less of the downrun areas and way way better waterfront in the likes of Burl, Oak, Port Credit and yes SC and Winona which are burbs of the hammer and still with some history (Its Canada you will never get much history unless you want Native) . The hammer really needs to clean up most of its waterfront for starters right from Burl to almost Van Wagners beach road is just mostly buildings that should be condemmed or DoFasco taking up half the area. Its not until you get past that then carry ontowards SC that the waterfront is nice. Maybe your right its on the cusp of a wave of re-generation but for the right here and now it is what it is whether thats your thing or not. The information coming out of this thread is a really great help to me. Mickey B I'm glad to see you changed the record !;):D I understand that you don't really like Hamilton and it's nice to know why so that people looking on (like me) can use the info in consideration of each persons finances, style of life and the project in mind. As you said the areas like Burlington to Toronto and Ancaster might be nice but are apparently more expensive and are not in the reach of everyone's pocket. Westdale appears to be a good compromise and is looking more and more interesting for us. It's also important to me that there is a university and college for my sons. Generally speaking : You can say about any place that it is great and beautiful but it might not be someone else's point of view - that's life. It is up to the individual to make his decision with the info given, that is why it is important not just to be negative about a place but to say why. The info quoted was very useful and perhaps the OP appreciates it too. ;) |

The wikipedia entry collates some of the key stats more easily than Mac's own website. |

McMaster University is very highly rated in some areas, particularly its research standing .

Granted... but you'd be surprised at how many UK undergrad students are now preferring to go to a 'local' university... maybe in Canada it's not changed. But in the UK, that's definitely been the trend in recent years.

Re: whats Hamilton like, please
Our sons may not get into Hamilton university, nor may they find the speciality that they will be looking for there, but at least Toronto is not very far if they need to look further a field. But there is a good chance they will find satisfaction in Hamilton I think.
Nowhere is perfect, and it's difficult to find everything to your taste in any city. |

- Brock (St Catharines) - Guelph - Waterloo - Western (London) South of the border, you've got a some very good unis within reasonable distance such as Cornell (which is in Ithica, NY - Finger Lakes), Syracuse and Rochester. SUNY (State University of New York) has a campus in Buffalo, too. US universities cost a lot more to attend - but for postgrad/postdoc options, definitely worth being aware of. |
