What is it with some people here?

People,
Tell me what is wrong with some of the people who post on this forum? Why do people seem to get pleasure out of sniping at others or rubbishing their posts/grammar/spelling/opinions etc? Instead of giving people answers to their questions or usefull advice I see so many attempts to belittle people
Everyday I see more examples of it and I am getting sick of it.
Surely people are here for the same reasons.
Come on get a grip.

Another tool which you might find helpful is the "ignore" facility, which I have used when I find some people's posts consistently offensive.
The only problem with that is that when they post s'thing you'd particularly like NOT to read, some berk posts it in its entirety in their reply to say how offensive it is!

Yep, I've been on here for 2 days and I've noticed the amount of derogatory remarks are amazing!
Remeber we are all in the same boat, and helping others in the same situation is what this site is all about!

I think this forum provides a healthy reality check. Canada is not the promised land. The streets of Toronto are not paved with gold (sorry!) and the world does not owe you a living.
Having said that, the weekend will see the end of my third month living in Canada, and despite some challenges, I would not swap my life here for my life back in the UK.
Since moving here, I've started a new job, bought a house, got a credit card and bank account, made some Canadian friends and made a good start on my new life. Having said all that I still have to balance my cheque book.
Immigrating anywhere is tough, even when you aren't faced with some of the problems people who have posted on here have had - difficulty in finding a job, integrating, getting qualifications/ financial history recognised.
I think you are a fool to yourself by pretending that everything will be easy. To my mind this forum enforces that, and long may it continue. Reading the posts on here has made an immeasurable difference to my settling in over here.

In the main I agree with everything you've said but a lot of newbies on this forum are disheartened by the 'appearance' of so many negative comments. However, what I would say to them is to remember that the immigrants that landed in Canada, got on with their new lives and integrated well aren't the ones who contribute to this forum (in the main). They're too busy creating a new life. So follow their example and good luck

and I personally believe that this place should remain a "healthy reality check" rather than a place to reassure potential immigrants that all will be roses when they arrive…
This forum covers Lifestyle & Culture not dreams and fantasies….
But it shouldn’t become a place to air inter-personal issues either

Hi All,
Just my personal input ,
but I don't think it is just this board ,
In my hobby I visit a few other boards , and they seem to be turning the same way,
Some posters seem to want the last word and jump at the slightest lack of knowledge, or mistakes.
Funnily it seems to be mainly brit posters on the boards,
Just helps to the phrase
get me out of here !!!
A brit with now another reason to be an ex pat[hopefully]
True, the best advice is ignore, hard to sometimes, but if you do the war is won ....
sloghtly o/t, but I just managed to buy some canadian wine in sainsburys, they only had one type mission hill, pinot grigio, hopefully it will taste nice.
cheers

If you re-read my initial post you will see that this is not what was being addressed in this thread, The thread is about people being rude, offensive and unhelpfull. Your comments, however accurate are unrelated to this subject.

I went into the process of emigration with blinkers on. I was naive.
I expected people in Toronto to speak French. Had I known how valuable French is here I would not have come.

Last week my husband had an offer of a job in Toronto which came totally out of the blue. Before making a decision we are obviously doing as much research as we can. We have spent many hours between us reading through various internet sites and, in my husband's case, speaking to people that have experienced life and work in Canada. The majority of information we have gathered has on the whole been positive. Then I discovered British Expats. I have to be honest and say when I began reading through the posts it scared the hell out of me and I did begin to think why are we even considering it? Some replies are so negative and some are just plain rude. I was feeling pretty disheartened with it all. I then started going through some of the older posts and found some more positive ones with questions and answers and it was then I decided to actually join. I'm happy to say that I did find answers to many of my questions and am glad that I didn't let the minority scare me off.
Please don't get me wrong, I don't believe for a minute that all will be plain sailing or that we wouldn't come across any negativity but I do believe that having a positive attitude when exploring new opportunities goes a long way.
