I think there is a difference between having a positive optomistic outlook and making the move based on rose-tinted self delusion.

Have you emigrated? Its hard work at times. The last thing you need is to do it expecting some Utopian paradise at the other end. Its really just the same shit in a shinier bucket.

There is nothing wrong with a positive outlook, and there is much to be positive about, but it has to be grounded in reality, and the reality is that a lot of the stuff that people dislike about the UK also goes on here to some extent. To pretend otherwise is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

You do have a valid point there iaink.....we first came out to Red Deer in 2003 and I'm afraid to say, we did have that rose-tinted/Utopian paradise self delusion that Red Deer would be our saviour for getting out of the crap in Hyde, Gtr Manchester. We lived here for 8 months and battled with the most surprising feelings of "mmm, didn't think we'd get this here" and "OMG the drivers here are worse nutcases than the Brits" - as well as others. We moved to SW Ontario and lived there for 9 months thinking it would be better there but found that you still encounter "some" of the similar problems you had in the UK and I only say "some". In all we lasted 17 months and went back to Manchester. We were pretty much homeless (but living with parents/relatives) for another 8 months, struggling to decide on where to live and also struggling to come to terms with living back in the UK in general. In our situation, we were all pretty much miserable there and decided to give Red Deer another crack of the whip - this time with our eyes wide open, no rose-tinted specs etc. We now take this place on face value and have little to be shocked about or whinge about (except the prices of the bloody houses which we can't afford now :( ). It has problems, ropey areas, drugs, crime, some cases of unruly kids, the same bad drivers, and but the cases really aren't "in yer face" like they were in Manchester. Advice to all in the Immigration process.....just be open minded. Enjoy your journeys though because all good things come to those who wait ;)

Some people come to Canada (Or go to another country) to forge a new life....rightly or wrongly they have high expectations...the reality can sometimes be dissapointing...some choose to ride it out, and some decide enough is enough......I kinda like this forum, for all it's negativity and positive aspects, because people can share their experiences...some people read to much into things and get the hump, others make light hearted comments, that are sometimes taken wrongly, and a few develop key board rage.

I suppose if we had to return to the UK...we would try our hardest to make it work...afterall where else could we go....we had tried a country that promised so much yet delivered very little.....At the moment we have what you have but in Canada...the kids are happy and we're happy...I think that if we ever returned to the UK, we'd soon fall into our old ways and realise why we opted out in the first place.

Now whatever you do please don't think this is a dig at anyone...it's just my opinion, and my 2c worth of input to this thread....

Very true.
One thing we did notice - not so much from this forum, but from the the "Let's move abroad and get the BBC to pay for it" type programs, was that 90% of couples all said the same thing :- "We're moving away to try to fix our marriage". This always really confused me because surely the whole emigration process would put a huge strain on any relationship?
The only thing I've had to moan about so far is that it's so hot, it melts the ice in your drink to fast :D

Solution : add a little hot water like my grandma used to
