Weight gain and Canada
#32
I've been struggling to keep my weight down since I came to Canada six years ago. That's partly because of health issues I had when I first arrived, which were unrelated to my move, but it is also because I don't get as much exercise, particularly in the winter. I don't do as much gardening, or walking, and now we are living in a bungalow, I'm not using stairs so often. I try to make up for it by swimming and using a gym, but it's often a losing battle, and I've had to diet several times since I've been here, to keep within the healthy BMI, which I never had to do in the UK.

I always lose weight when living in Canada when compared to the US. I spent the summer in the US, and in 2 months gained 25 pounds, not sure why other then maybe because the portions tend to be larger here.

Thanks to everyone for your replies
The tips I've gathered are
Eat healthy
Exercise
Be aware of the additives used in Canadian food
Hmmm maybe not rocket science after all but I really enjoyed reading all your replies!
Thanks again

When I worked in Calgary, the most I ever walked was to the car and getting out of it. So the pounds piled on.
At lunch time I was surrounded by places that served fat people food. Not many places to grab a sandwich or a pasty. Beef is everywhere and everything is covered in melted cheese.
However on the flip side, I had good access to yoga centre and a really nice gym.
I went hiking, biking and snowboarding (made many friends) and I actually turned out to be in better shape. I ate less red meat and more plants.
So to answer the original question. I did gain weight but in a good way. I lost a lot of body fat, gained more muscle mass and was waaay more toned.
I found the key to be more easier access to health facilities and parks than in London. But its a lifestyle change, you can easily go the other way and balloon up.

4 Bells, I am getting some nice tasting whole wheat and 5 grain stuff, that I have been pleasantly surprised by as it tastes good, and isn't sweet. It's the ham and cold meats that get me...I run a mile at the word 'maple' as it seems to mean sticky! As soon as the kids go to school I am going to join 'your' lot at the gym because I have one three mins away, and it seems like an idea as it gets colder.
Good, good
But do read the bread label- even some of the healthy looking stuff has some nasties in it !

I cannot respond to this thread without trying to decide from which cliff I should throw myself.
The Big D starts (again) on Wednesday ('cos I'm going out for anniversary dinner on Tuesday!
).
I am soooo sick of losing these same pounds, plus a few extras each time. It's boring now - and harder each time.
On the other hand I've had a great summer with no self-discipline and lots of margeritas - but none of my work trousers fit, so needs must!

My weight shot up when they opened a bar in my lobby.
It wasn't so much that my alcohol intake went up but that I also started consuming more bar food meals.
I dipped about 8 pounds after deciding to restrict myself the amount of meals I'm allowed to eat in a bar during the week.
On a recent trip to Colombia I shed 5 pounds just because the produce there is a much higher quality. You'll all be pleased to know that I have managed to put that back on. Rib Fest on Saturday night helped.
I'm sure if I had a better supermarket near by my weight would dip further.
I exercise at a gym (classes mostly) 6 to 8 hours per week of spinning, Thai Boxing and Boxing but diet has been more the key I think.

I've been in Newfoundland for the last 12 days and put on 4 pounds during that time...I'd better get off the island quick... (and it's not that the food is especially good here, just greasy and sweet...)
