Default A warning for work permit holders

If your company has an American parent, rememebr that they are a!@#holes. Mine announced the closure of the Calgary office this morning. Even more annoying was that with their eventual help I submitted the Federal part of a PNP application a few weeks ago. This is now invalid and I have to start again. Even more of a bummer because the application fees were paid by me.

Oh well, 23 months of work permit left to find another job

Good luck finding a new job. Can you transfer the WP to another employer?

From what I've heard as long as the new job if of similar type then it can be done, even if they don't call it a transfer.

They've since offered us a relocation package to move to Boston, but personally I'd rather gnaw my own "bits" off that move my family to the US.

I'd think carefully about that, Massachusetts might seem very liberal to someone moving from Alberta, but Boston's a nice city. If the employer offers a healthcare benefit sponsored immigration to the US might be better than uncertain status in Canada. One concern with Boston though would be the cost of property, it's an expensive place.

Yep, Boston is a nice city, but it's not what we want from life. For a few years we considered Canada and Australia and in the end perhaps chose the easy option of Canada since I had a job I could walk into (it was always my favorite anyway, but don't tell her indoors ).

Also, as a chemical engineer in the current economic climate I would much rather search for a job in Calgary thatn in Boston when the "dirty deed" is inevitably done again

Sorry to read you news, it sucks, but at least you knew the situation going in. Good luck whatever you decide to do. Boston is expensive isnt it, but there are worse places in the US I imagine?

Perhaps comments about Alberta are best left to those who actually know something about it?

Perhaps comments on all subjects on this site would be best left to those who actually know something about it.

There would be a lot less to read.
