Hi all, we are very new to this site, but hope to get some good information on moving over to canada.we have a 3 year plan, but if we can secure accomadation and work,maybe sooner? fancy Nova Socita, any one tell me more about the place. joe is a mechanic with loads of qualifactions,working as a manager for local rescue company at moment, are mechincs needed anyone know, and what is average wage, house prices and cost of living pleaseeeeeeee. well must be cheaper than uk anyhow,hope to here from anyone.thanks

Not much in it to be honest. Away from the major cities property prices are lower, but wages are generally lower and running a house and cars here is more expensive then you might think based on a vacation or reccy trip and renting a car and eating out...both of which might lead you to believe the cost of living is a lot lower than it really is.

The only financial advantage could be that you can afford a bigger house (or at least afford a house)...but then you have to heat it and pay the taxes on it. Cars and gasoline are cheaper, but insurance is nasty and you have to drive further to get anywhere, in a vehicle that probably has at least a 1.8l engine, and probably a 3+ liter V6. Having said that, Im glad I live here.

I haven't been able to find a source of info but I suspect that the average driver puts on more miles per year in Canada than a driver in the UK. Hence higher insurance because of higher risk.

Plus weather related no faults, plus (and this is the biggy) higher legal and medical expenses and propensity to sue for loss of earnings etc. I wonder how Canada compares to the US?


I suppose it depends if the risk is assesed based on the distance actually travelled, or the time spent in the vehicle

Car insurance is astronomically more expensive in Canada than in the US. That's one reason why we still have the US plates.

I don't think an average suburban Canadian travels any further than an average suburban Brit

Must be more to it than medical legal aspect then. Canada is a pretty small market too I guess at 36M people which cant help promote competition. Im getting quotes at the moment...very depressing, and a very large spread. My best so far for the two cars and drivers is >1200p.a and thats for 10* and 8* rated drivers, and would involve moving my house policy too

Out of curiosity have you even had to make a claim on your US insurance for an accident in Canada?

No. I don't know what the service would be like as the policy states that claims for vehicles permanently located in Canada are handled through the office in Albuquerque. That seems spectacularly inconvenient.

hi, we moved to prince edward island 3 years ago, we were nominated by the province, it cost extra, and were fast tracked through within a year, the same happened for my brother inlaw and family and his wives parents, they are in ill health, but 3 weeks ago a family turned up next door to us from leeds, they just turned up, and he was told when he got a job they would supply him with a work permit and then do the immigration, i'm a bit miffed but not surprised, prince edward island is crying out for workers but everyone goes west.
