In the thread about truckers wages, someone asked what all the wives do when not shopping. well im 43 with no small children and for the first time not working. my hubby is a trucker so can be away for 5-6 days at a time so i need to fill my days with things apart from tv and shopping. i stumbled across www.govolunteer.ca a great site that lists all available activities from helping old and young to hospitals and day centres. i now read for the blind and partially blind at VOICEPRINT. its down loaded on to the internet for anyone to hear. its a growing org and they love english / scottish etc accents. its a great way to integrate youself and get to know people and canada. im now also volunteering for edmonton festivals throughout the summer. so get off your bum and do something you may never have done before just like me.

I agree we all have to give back a little, I began volunteering at a hospital last year and now wonder why I did not start years earlier.

I have just received a phonecall asking me to start tomorrow at the local food bank. It's only for 2 hours every week but I feel my spirits lifted already and looking forward to doing something productive other than housework

Me and Mr Y-C-D are also signing up as volunteers in the local Search and Rescue group. We have to undergo training and am looking forward to that too
I also need to start earning so need a p/t job - maybe that will follow soon

I have been volunteering at the Calgary Cardiac Rehab Program two days a week for over five years.
Just trying to give back for all the help I got when I had my surgery and my ongoing care.
Mrs_P also is volunteering for the local Lions Eye Bank. She types up and prints the thank you letters that are sent out to the families of donors and the medical staff who worked with the patients.
Cheers

FANTASTIC, IN ENGLAND I NEVER HAD THE TIME OR TO BE HONEST THE INCLINATION BUT I REALLY ENJOY IT. NOW FOR MY OWN GREEDY INTERESTS I HAVE VOLUNTEERED FOR THE EDMONTON RACING GRAND PRIX, I CAN MEET NEW PEOPLE AND SEE THE RACING (HOPEFULLY MEET SOME CELEBRITIES LIKE MARIO ANDRETTI)
