Hi We have just recently moved to canada and brought some of our electrical stuff with us(running machine and stereo)didnt want to leave behind as very expensive. We didn't order any converters before we left as we thought it would be cheaper to get out here.
We cant seem to find any stores that sell them here in montreal
, can anyone recommend any stores or sites please.

These are a great bunch of guys. Based in Vancouver but do mail order. Give them a call first and discuss your needs as not all things are suitable to be used with voltage converters, especially things with motors. Its all down to the Hertz frequency .

You might have more luck asking for "Step Up" Transformers
Radioshack probably sell them
Yup...

Just need the right converter for the outgoing 240V.
The running machine might do a few odd things, dependent on 50Hz vs 60Hz, timings and speeds might be out of whack.

There's a couple of stores Downtown in Montreal, one is on a corner just outside Chinatown (Davidson? or something... it says 220V all over the windows). The other is on the right hand side going up the street (away) from the Chinatown gates.
You're looking at about $60-70 for a 1000W converter. To find out how many watts you need:-
Find out the amperage (A) of the appliance at 240V. Then multiply by the number of amps. Then multiply by 1.2.
It might just say it in Watts (W).. "1500W" in which case just multiply by 1.2
E.g. Computer says "1.5A 240V"
240 x 1.2 x 1.5 = 432W ... so you pick a converter with that number or higher. If you are running multiple appliances from the same converter, just add up the total Watts (W).
