Default Visiting Halifax, NS - Accom Help

Hiya guys,

I'm looking for a bit of help from those of you that live/have visited the Halifax area in NS.

We (2 adults and 2 kids - 8 & 3) are looking to come out next year on a recce sort of holiday and want to stay in the Halifax area. I have looked on the net about renting out holiday cottages etc and it is proving to be quite expensive for the four of us plus flights.

What I was wondering was if anyone knew of any companies or even personal contacts that would rent out a house/apartment for a few weeks. Also, what about hotels? I've seen people mention on here that they stayed in 'suites', does this include things like kitchens and the like? Sorry if all sounds a bit vague, but the general gist of the matter is that we don't want to be stuck in a hotel room for a few weeks with a couple of kids, but paying out for a cottage on one of the tourist trails is expensive.

Thanks in advance.

Karen

If you are visiting in the summer months July August, then Dalhousie University in Halifax is inexpensive. Nothing fancy, decent beds and private bathroom kitchens are there for you to use they are just not private. Google search and you should find the website.
You will find all summer rentals for cottages are very expensive everywhere!
Hope this helps

Why don't you go to www.novascotia.com and get them to send you a tourist guide. In it you will find places of all kinds, also it will show you what is in the area and prices. Also a map of the province. That way you will be able to spend all winter having a look through the guide and picking places you would like to see and do.

Hi,

I have stayed in the loft apartment in the Verandah. There is a little kitchenette-enough to make a simple meal (fridge, microwave and i think 2 ring hob) and of course a coffee maker!. My husband stayed there for 3 weeks and it was fine. also, if you dont want to enter the apatment through the house, you can use the fire escape! Not sure if its big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids though, the owner would be able to say (i also know that there are maximum occupancy laws for b&b's which are governed stricly so the owner tells me but other than that it was fine. The owner and I are still friends. it can get booked up early though. She has a basement apartment that is rented out to students on a long term contract but you never know, they may need some one to sublet.

premier executive suites (www.premieresuites.com)have apartments in Bishops Landing, Lower Water Street-aimed at business people who are staying in town for longer than a few days. I live there and I am guessing that they can get quite expensive but really i have no idea on the price (there is a pool and gym which may work if you have kids), dont forget that you can claim the tax back on the accomodation.

Hope this is useful.

You might also contact Mike and Orla Wilson, who run a relocation service (uk2novascotia) and are members of this forum. I got an email from them recently with a deal for using Elite Suites in Halifax. They do short and long term rentals. We rented a 2-bed suite last year when we visited Toronto with the kids and it was a good way to get a feel for living there.

I found a good website when we were looking for accomodation last summer - Cottages in Canada

that you can search on price, in case you haven't already come across it.

Good luck!

Hi there,

I knew you lot would be a big help. Thanks ever so much for all your replies, we shall definitely be looking into some of the suggestions.

You know how it is, if it was just me and hubby then it wouldn't be a problem, but with two kiddywinks to keep entertained then it's a different kettle of fish. Unfortunately, there is no way we can leave them with anyone for that length of time, besides, I would miss them too much, even though they drive me crazy sometimes.

Thanks again all, if I met you all I would by you a beer, so here's a virtual one .
