Something like 1 in 3 use a professional advisor. Depends on your confidence levels with the forms, and how complex your background is I guess.

Bottom line is that even with a consultant on board you will have to do the lions share of the donkey work in gathering all the necessary documentation together anyway, and a consultant cant get things processed any faster, all they can do is error-proof the process.

Advice is plentiful in the immigration area, but it tends to be offered in response to specific issues and questions.

We used an Immigration Lawyer in Toronto (Abrams & Krochak), and are happy we did. Yes you still have to get the evidence etc together, but the forms are bullet proof as is their introduction letter.

The English test your mate did (and says he didn't have to) is compulsory for Skilled worker class visas (assuming he did an IELTS test), so will depend on what class visa you are going to apply under.
As stated, there is a lot of information available here.

Good luck

You're not going to be any wiser at the end of the thread than the beginning. Those that did their own will say it is easy to do (as I did), those that used a 'consultant' will likely be split between those who thought it was a waste of money and those who had a great experience.

If you can do research and fill in forms, easy to do. If you can't think of getting help.

Use the advance search feature and you'll have more threads on the topic than you can shake a stick at.
