Default Visa to exchange my drivers licence

Hi Everyone, We are here in Alberta, we came over on the Parent/Grandparent Supervisa, I took our documents to the vehicle licensing place to have my UK licence exchanged for the Alberta licence, I was told that I should have another document saying I am a visitor?
The ladies behind the desk didn't know what to do, one suggestion was that I should have got a document from immigration when we landed, I think they need to see something that states " Visa" or Visitor Visa? someone also said go accross the border and you will get the document maybe? any help would be great.
