Default (very) small movers ?

Hi Folks,

I have two or three boxes of effects to move over to Vancouver from London,UK
in addition to two large suitcases when I land there in a couple of weeks.
Sizewise the boxes are "book boxes" and they're heavy.

I'll be taking the cases with me on the flight. Would it be viable to have the boxes sent over by courier or would it be better to pay for them as excess luggage, if that's even possible.

Does anyone know of any other options ?

If I go the courier route, do they charge by weight or volume ? Are there any recommendations ?

Thanks folks.

Freight companies, couriers included, charge the actual weight or cubed weight (based on volume), whichever is the higher.

Try getting a quote from Excessbaggage.com perhaps? We recently used them to ship about 14 boxes, they go by volume, hence it goes by boat and has taken about 8 weeks. If you go by air, it will be by weight and I think is about 2 weeks shipping. Maybe, contact the airline and see what they charge for cargo items?

I was going to suggest Excess Baggage. They are the people you see at the major airports. No personal experience.

To clarify your statement above. Irrespective of shipping mode, the carrier will charge by weight or volumetric weight as Aviator has pointed out. Think a ton of feathers vs. a ton of lead. The ton of feathers will take up much more of the plane/truck/container.

i used UPS for 3 large-ish boxes - around 20-25kg each

were here in around 6 days and cost the guts of £300GBP

nothing broken, no customs charges (only a $15 handling fee from UPS Canada for some reason) and it was door-to-door

Try DHL, they do not charge for weight, if it goes in the box then its allowed at the set price.
