Vernon - good or bad?
#1
Hi to all!
We need some help we are about to have our visas so the search has now become reality. We have been looking and looking and looking!!!! and feel that Vernon and around seems like a good option. I need to find work in a health or social setting as an Occupational therapist, my husband is a builder/plumber/electrician & registered gas fitter, two of our children will need to commute to college and one is still at secondary school. Presently we live in Pembrokeshire and water sports plays a huge part in our leisure activities - so we thought living near the lakes would be a sensible option. We would like to find somewhere that has a bit of land attached - we already live in a semi-rural area and would like to find a home/land to build on in a similar setting, yet not too far from life! Can anyone help as we are feeling a bit lost is this a good choice or not - HELP!!

We had a trip to BC last summer, and stopped at Vernon for a few hours.
I actually really liked the look and feel of it. It had more of a 'high street' which gave it quite an English feel.
My personal observations are all I know of the area, but yup, it seems very pleasant, so best of luck to you all.

I was born in Vernon and grew up there. Moved away at 19 to go to University.
I have now lived away from Vernon longer than I've lived there but both my parents and my wifes parents live there so we make it back a few times a year.
It is a good place to live. Although I'm not sure what finding work is like. I know that there is a lot of construction now so that could be a plus. I'm not sure what opportunities there may be in the health care field though. I know they are planning to expand the hospital but I don't know if any progress has been made.
I did my first year of university at the local college but went to Victoria for the rest - haven't been back except to visit parents. The college will give you two years of a university education. If you want to commute to Kelowna (30 miles) you can get a 4 year degree.
The highschools are good - at least when I was there. That was over 20 years ago now.
Real estate prices are increasing but are still significantly less than Vancouver or Calgary. Probably less than Kelowna too.
Vernon is a good place if you like outdoors, fishing, hunting, skiing, mountain biking, hockey, hockey, hockey, and hockey. And like everywhere in the world, football (soccer) in the summer.
The city and suburbs (if you can call them that) has a population of close to 50000. So not huge but not tiny either (at least not by Canadian standards). It will have everything you would ever want to buy.
If I think of anything more, I will add it.
So overall, I will give it a GOOD!!! Although I'll admit to being biased toward Vernon.
