Vancouver, don't get it.

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
I haven't said much in this thread because all lot of you seem to be acting like complete knobs but this I agree with.
But it hasn't been as bad as some threads - I think I2C you are being alittle overly sensitive.

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
Could someone please explain this "other half" thing? Is there some inner sanctum thing going on here amongst posters I'm oblivious to? I thought the whole point of this forum was to share knowledge and experiences of immigrating and assimilating into a new life in a new country.
I find the whole petty squabbling that seems to go on a bit embarrasing and slightly distasteful.
Maybe I'm missing something....

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
Ive not read all 200+ posts, but it strikes me there is much recent discussion here about posters and personality, and none about the subject matter.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but personal comments are not welcome.
If you cant get it back on topic, then Im closing it as this is not a place for personal attacks and comments.

Before someone jumps in and says "yes but the same rude posters also offer valuable information" - that is no excuse for the rude responses and ascerbic posts which are almost always unsolicited and certainly unwanted.

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
I cant be bothered to read all the posts, but here is my take on Van.
We live in north Van, I commute downtown every weekday.
Van is a city... like any other it has a diverse population, good parts, bad parts and parts I have not been to.
Shop at Gucci and yes its expensive, shop at Canadian Superstore and things are cheaper! I find compared to the UK i cant do all the shopping in one shop and get the best price. But the same can be said of Toronto.
Parts of the city are dull, with concrete canyons, but take north van for example, some great fusion of old industrial ship building and modern housing.
Now why we live here... My commute on the sea bus involves 15min walk and 15min on a boat every day, bypassing the need to drive into downtown (Think London only with Canadian drivers!)
Housing is very expensive this close in, $380k for a 1 bedroom apartment, but compare that to central london, its relativly cheap. Houses up on Lynn go for the 700's for anything you would want to live in, again, its expensive compared to say nottingham, but compared to within 15miles of london, its cheaper.
At the weekend or eveninings, i can walk into the forrest, run up grouse mountain (well crawl the last km!) Ski or snowboard etc... Last year a colleague Ski'd in the morning on grouse, them played golf at the creek, then swam in the sea all in the same day. Whistler and squamish just up the road etc...
Its the great outdoors, the offerings are different to London, I would always say to people, give Van a chance, it takes a few weeks to find the gems down town, but they are there, though less so than Paris. If you want to work hard and then play hard outdoors, then I cant say i have found a better place to live than Vancouver.

However, there comes a point where the "signal to noise" ratio becomes a problem, and outright personal attacks are not going to be tolerated.

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
It's pissing down with rain in Vancouver this morning. I can't see much of downtown, nevermind the mountains
The dragon boaters and kayakers look like they're enjoying themselves though
The reason i enjoy living in Vancouver (i enjoyed living in the UK equally), is that it has a nice relaxed feel to it for me. I'm also very lazy and find the laid back lifetsyle it offers me very suitable.
I'm semi retired at the moment so having much of the day off each day gives me the options to easily and freely do what i want, whether that be snowboarding in the winter, or mountain biking, walking on the beach with the dog, shopping downtown, eating fish and chips, or just snoozing on the couch in the summer.
I really don't care if the population is all white, black, orange, yellow, or hairy. Its doesn't impact my life. I don't really care if the architecture is a little boring and similar. The natural setting makes up for that. I really don't care if the bars close at midnight (i don't know, i'm usually asleep by then). Most of the things mentioned in this thread don't really impact daily life. If it does, the chances are you're a weirdo.
I live my life and can do exactly what i want and enjoy and i'm very content with it. I'd expect that wherever i chose to live, otherwise why bother? That far outweighs the need for visual differences, or things that make people feel trendy or a little bit open minded and out there that others appear to seek (although i have my doubts).
Today I'll be having another coffee, popping to the gym, have some chicken for lunch, take the dog out by the water, have a nap, maybe watch some fighting, head downtown to buy Apple TV, then enjoy the evening with my wife. I would be doing the same (or similar) thing had i stayed in London, or Yorkshire, or lived in another country that suits me.
As for arguments on here. I enjoy a bit of piss taking, banter, arguing, and out and out fibbing to wind people up. It's the internet. They're words written and read predominantly by strangers. I would guess the vast majority of people on here are very different in real life and no doubt very pleasant to be around and talk to.
You all should do as is done in the Canniversary section and give each other a hug and a pat on the bum, and be thankful you don't live in Nova Scotia. I hear it's a bit shit there

So basically, you're a bum who likes to watch semi-naked men wrestle with each other.

The other difference being we have floor to ceiling windows next to the couch and TV over looking the water and mountains
I might have a nap before the gym actually. I'm sleepy.

Re: Vancouver, don't get it.
It is also good because it is reducing the number of bike-to-work-weekers who take my bike rack spot on the bus
Ironically though by living in a forest on a North Shore mountain, you of course don't get quite such a spectacular mountain view anyway, so no big problem with clouds messing up the view
