183 days rule applies to all Canadian permanent residents, regardless the fact that
they were principal or dependent applicant when applying for immigration visa. Once
landed they are all PR with the same rights and obligations. Currently there is no
way to keep both, US job and Canadian PR indefinitely, unless your husband will live
in Canada and commute to work in the US.
I'm sorry but you can't have cake and eat it too...

in re: the above, is it legal *and acceptable* for a Canadian PR to reside in Canada
and work in the US for an American based company? What about if said PR telecommutes
for the job, and remains 100% in Canada?
If acceptable, is this a situation that can continue long-term?

Everything is acceptable as long as your husbands meets residency requirements to
maintain his PR status. There are thousands of Canadian citizens and PR who commute
every day to work in US. Your husband is not required to work for Canadian company or
in Canada to maintain his status, he just must reside in Canada and be present here
for at least 183 days in any 12 months period.
