Re: UK license in Alberta question...
I think like others said, it would more be about insurance, and if your policy would cover a foreign licence or drivers under 25, you should probably just phone your company and ask.

TBH I dont know but the link is for the OFFICIAL Govt of Alberta site that deals with drivers licence which I assume takes priority over the Wiki or even my interpretation of what is required.
http://www.canlii.org/en/ab/laws/reg...2.html#history Sections two & three we know about. Part One makes no mention whatsoever of any requirement for an International permit. Oh well? ;) Right Hand, Left hand? We were confused but now we're not sure? |
Re: UK license in Alberta question...
Okay, seeing as I'm at a loose end today & have no life, I asked the question re International Driving Permits & UK Licences on the "Ask a Question" page of Alberta Government Website, mentioning the potential different interpretations etc.
Probably a record for any Government Department, but I received a reply in less than an hour! The reply is exactly as I received it, bar my name blanked out. Its nice to know The Alberta Government employ people with such high standards of literacy. I don't claim to be perfect, but you would expect higher standards from a Government Department surely? Thinking about it, maybe not? Anyway: **********, If you are visiting here you are allow do drive here for 1 year with your UK licence and an International Permit depending on the expiry date of your international permit so which ever comes first. If you do not have an international driving permit to go with your UK licence then you can only drive here for 90 days with your UK driver’s licence. Motor Vehicles South Service Alberta & Registries So there you have the 'official line'. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you should have an International Driving Permit to go with your licence. I can't be arsed to enquire "why"? This is Canada remember? A lot of things don't always make sense or are just 'different'. Needless to say, I see no mention of the above in The Alberta Traffic Safety Act? Maybe the respondent made it up as he/her went along? :p The chances of any Cop asking for your Passport to see if you've been in AB longer than 90 days are I suspect, remote in the extreme. However for the sake of six quid, anyone planning an extended stay is best advised to get one as chances are, if you were to have a prang after 90 days, it could be an issue regarding insurance? |
