UK license in Alberta question...

My daughter has just moved to Canada, to join us from the UK.

She needs to drive one of our vehicles on Monday.

Our daughter is not 25 until Tuesday (that's when we are gonna go to town to apply for her Alberta license), and we were told (just by someone we know - but who might not really know) that this means she can not legally drive the vehicle without us.

Anyone know if this is true?!

1. it is not the license, she can drive up to a year as a visitor and probably 90 days as a PR, it is probably the insurance. Is she covered on your policy is the question?

Visitors to Alberta

If you are visiting Alberta from outside the country, you must have your valid home jurisdiction drivers licence and an International Drivers Permit to drive on Alberta roads. You may drive in Alberta up to 1 year.

If you are visiting Alberta from another province, you may drive using your home jurisdiction licence.

Is the requirement for an International Driving Permit in AB a new regulation? I've never been asked for one although I haven't rented a vehicle in AB for over a year.

If it is now required, it seems like more pointless red tape.

I have a provisional licence only, will this give me any advantage whatsoever in Alberta?

No - but the insurance is usually valid for any one over 25 or with 10years experience . .

I guess it only becomes a problem if you get pulled over by the Police or have an accident.
I dont know how clearer the rules can be as in post #4.
Daughter will now be considered as a resident of Alberta as she has moved here and is no longer a visitor.

I've been pulled over by the Police in Alberta. The Cop gave my UK Licence a quick once over & was quite happy. I had a verbal smack over the knuckles & I was on my way. I Wasn't asked for an "International Drivers permit". Neither have I been asked for one when renting a vehicle in AB which is many times over recent years.

The Wiki article states just a UK licence is required for Alberta. The above link on the relevant page says different. Is it a new regulation or has it always been that way but never enforced or worried about? I'd like to know for future reference.

TBH I dont know but the link is for the OFFICIAL Govt of Alberta site that deals with drivers licence which I assume takes priority over the Wiki or even my interpretation of what is required.
