Now that I have landed in March, I am back home and have put house on the market and just trying to plan ahead for hopefully a smooth transition to living with my family in Ontario.
Can anyone confirm that I can still use the e-mail address which is connected to my present ISP provider, when I am living in Canada?
Thanks Granma Nessie

So I would suggest that once the account with the ISP is closed, no you can't.
Just advise people of your new email address via your contacts on your computer and anyone else interested. I would suggest Google gmail account, then you don't need to change it everytime you change service provider.

Usually those emails are reliant on having an account with that ISP unless they are net based such as hotmail, Gmail etc.

Thanks Tangram for your speedy reply. I do have a hotmail account too so I will change the important contacts all over to that before I go.

I have a Virgin.net email addy since errr 1998.. No longer use Virgin UK .... Email is fine

As said above it will work fine
I still use a yahoo.co.uk and a Hotmail.co.uk address. It would be good to start a yahoo.ca address tho for job hunting and such like, and just keep them all.

one thing to consider is that if you use craigslist or kijiji with a .co.uk it might well not put your email thru. we were here months getting really frustrated with trying to buy furniture till we set up a .ca address and found that all of a sudden we got replies. inconvenince we could have done without. i now run my uk address and a ca one filtered into one browser. much easier

We are looking at the same issue. We are with BT and we have 90 days from closing down the internet to upgrade the account. They want GBP1.60 per month and we can keep the BT Yahoo mail account.

I don't know how it works in the Sherlock Holmes business but applying for a job with a yahoo or hotmail account means instant delete button in the real world.

They are free. What actual difference is there between them and a paid for ISP email address?
What email addresses have credibility in the "real world" you inhabit?

I've kept my BT email account going over the years even though the internet provider has been changed many times. 1.60 GBP pm gets you 10 email adresses I think. It works fine.

Academic ones. Would you take seriously an application for an internship or whatever lawyers call entry level employees if it came from hotmail?

I, honestly, wouldn't care. The content of the email would be far more important than the ISP it came from, particularly if the position was aimed at those unlikely to be earn lots of money, i.e., students.
