Default UK builds the smallest houses

Smaller than US and Australia (so no doubt Canada too!)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8201900.stm

Another reason I can't WAIT to move, although I am sure I will be living in a wee flat (or CONDO!) for the first while....

They get away with it cos they sell property based on number of bedrooms rather than area. Did you know that they use special undersize furniture in show homes/flats so that the rooms look bigger than they are when you look round

at the bottom it says:

The Cabe survey questioned residents of homes built between 2003 and 2006, in London or within an hour's travel time of the capital.

so perhaps the headline should actually read

"Dwellings in SE England are on average smaller than those in other countries"

I don't think they are building them any bigger in Glasgow - and still nowhere near North American standards!

Larger house = more cleaning, more furniture required = more expense etc etc.

I'm a condo kinda guy so maybe i'm biased

All to do with availability of space. If everybody in the UK each lived in larger properties maybe it would keep the population down

It's also quite nice to be near some facilities.

maybe not, but my parents' house in Dumfries was built in 2006 and it's pretty spacious. And the huge average house size in North America is a bit of a worry from an environmental viewpoint: The average new house in the USA has more than doubled since the 1950s - with a corresponding drain on energy resources for all the additional heating and AC.

OMG!!!

There's houses in Cheshire built out of cow sh!t, straw and timber and they've been around for 400 hundred years!

Wood houses work over here for many reasons! And work better than brick too.

Am I not right in saying that the smallest house in the UK (as in a genuine house, not a room etc) is in Glasgow Scotland anyway?
I am currently in a house in Edinburgh and it is far to small so much so that I am not going to have flog furniture etc that I cant fit in!
