U of T Mississauga?
Anyone have any knowledge of U of T Mississauga?
My son has just been offered a transfer (after 1 year at Dalhousie) to UTM to do computer science. He was expecting St George and doesn't know anything about UTM or Missisauga (or whether to accept!).
Anyone have any helpful info/opinions on the location and standing of UTM? Is it correct to assume this is not as good as St George?
Thank you

Hi Pebblebeach
I work at U of T Mississauga so I am probably a little biased
The campus is obviously smaller than downtown St. George and is situated by the Credit River in a lovely setting and there is a quite large deer population which stroll through the campus! I find the downtown campus too spawling and impersonal.
UTM has a tight knit community feel to it and active alumni. It does have some very strong programs and some students actually switch from the downtown campus although I am not familiar with the Computer Science program. If it is the Specialist Program I would assume this has fairly high calibre standing.
The campus as a whole is undergoing major expansion because of increasing student population and has some excellent facilities such as a new instructional building, athletic centre and the CCIT building and library.
The diploma they graduate with is still a U of T degree so it is not classed as a lower qulaification than if they studies at St. George.
Hope this helps in your decision.

Re: U of T Mississauga?
U of T has campuses in various parts of the city, presumably because there is limited space at the main campus downtown and with Toronto being so spread out it assists students with traveling, etc. As The Lees said it doesn't affect the quality of the degree earned.

Re: U of T Mississauga?
Just a little update :
Dropped off my son at UTM yesterday. First impressions were very good. Lovely campus and residence, well organized welcome, just need to get of the wait list and into the last one of the classes he needs during the next week of fun. Very pleased they (finally!) offered him transfer credits for all the work he did last year at Dalhousie.
We really liked Mississauga itself too. I was pleasantly surprised, I was not expecting lots of tree lined avenues and more stores than the whole of NS in my mind I was expecting it to be more like a giant Milton Keynes with tower blocks - but actually found it really pleasant. Son already loves it there (after 3 days!!) compared to our tiny NS seaside town which never impressed him at all and to Halifax which he though was ok for a year.
The Lees - you have a lovely place of work. Thanks for you input, which was reassuring.

Yeah, that's actually a bit of a misnomer because St. George has by far the better research reputation compared with UTSC or UTM. The difference really is like saying Queen's is the same as Carleton ... Don't know about teaching ratings though.

Re: U of T Mississauga?
Teaching ratings are relatively dependent as always on the individual course instructor but the average overall is rated above average at UTM. I can only comment on my own department which has world renowned faculty teaching, the same faculty who also teach and supervise grad students at St. George.

Just to clarify UTM provides only undergrad programs and grads have no option other than to attend St. George which is the research campus so yes they do have the better research reputation. As for undergraduate degrees it has the same worth as a St. George degree in the eyes of employers or even grad schools.

That says it all, doesn't it.

Oh, that's not fair. I have no great love for U of T, but the fact is that the two satellite campuses are set up just for undergrads. As is Glendon a satellite of York.
All the grad programs (but not all the research active faculty) are housed at the main campuses.
