I checked out the Halifax School board website which says that the children of work permit holders do not require study permits.
However, the CHC in their infinite wisdom have decided that I have to have them anyway and will not issue my WP without me paying the fee. My children are 7 and 12. Has anyone else had to pay this despite the fact that there is clear evidence that they don't need one? still waiting :( |
Re: TWP -School fees
So annoying isn't it. I sent off the draft as soon as they insisted as I didn't think that it was worth arguing as your really can't win. I applied for my WP in January and I am still waiting.

Re: TWP -School fees
Glug glug glug - sorry!
This is a response from a School Head - Vancouver Island - not that long ago. Thought it might help. So im sitting here thinking I don't want TWP can I apply for anything else instead??? OR can I get my money back when my PR comes through? Here it is:- It is my understanding that if your children entered Canada with their parent or legal guardian, and if the parent or legal guardian is in BC and if they have a work permit for a year or more then the children are Provincially funded in our public school system. However, if the parent or legal guardian only has a Temporary Resident Permit, the children are not funded in a public school. Also, if the parent has applied for landed immigrant status from within Canada and has acknowledgement from CIC with a letter of “No Objection†the children are also funded. The Board Policy allows for students from out of area to be moved up until September 30, if the enrollment exceeds the school capacity. The first day of the 2008-2009 school year will be Tuesday, September 2, 2008. Registration would require that we take a copy of their Birth Certificates and we would also require a copy of the necessary paperwork that you have (Work Permit etc.). The school should be open the last week of August and you could come in and register them then. N |

Can someone clarify whether "the children of TWP holders are not funded in a public school". Is this a Federal Regulation or provincial one only?

What they mean by the difference between a TWP holder and a temporary resident permit I am not sure. I think it means a visitors visa (from the UK we don't have an actual visa but other nationalities might. |
Re: TWP -School fees
Its exactly what I was thinking. I immediately thought I don't want a TWP otherwise i'll have to pay until PR comes through - or wait til I get it to go.
So I hope that the Work Permit issued is taken as fundable - I think i'll send him into the school and ask - then if not i'll get them study permits along with our PR application. If I find out anymore (if I email him again etc) - I'll post it right back here. Nats (Sorry if confusing - but it was confusing to me too!). |
