Default Two speed Canada?

Thinking back to life in the UK, I was always aware of the very obvious north - south divide - if you lived in the SE of England, life was good - if you lived anywhere else, it was less than perfect.

Anyone who lives in Canada knows that Ontario is the centre of the universe and everything else spins around it - however, having lived in both Ontario and Alberta, I'm not so aware of an east - west divide. Edmonton is the provincial capital, but it doesn't look that much better financed than Calgary.

Anyone else from other provinces care to comment?

To be more accurate, Toronto is the center of the universe.

I'm not convinced by this north-south divide thing. It's a myth perpetrated by northerners so that they have an excuse to complain about something.

Actually, I suppose the main difference is that there is generally more unemployment in the north, so those without a job are badly off, whilst those who are in employment live like kings. In the south east, everyone is badly off because of higher costs of living - housing, in particular.

The center of the universe is not necessarily the best place to be, its just the canadian media bias, as they are all based in TO, and the fact its the only city in canada the vast majority of those overseas have ever heard of!

The UK north south divide, or more accurately the SE / not SE divide is definatly for real. My feel in canada is there is something of the same economic have / have not thing going on between the maritime and prarie provinces and the rest of the country to some extent, but maybe thats my Ontario outlook. From here Ontario, Alberta, BC, and to a lesser extent Quebec, look like the economicaly prosperous bits, relative to the others.

At the centre of the universe, all is dark. All of the cr*p in the whole universe is headed your way. It is cold, an empty space where no one wants to really be. So, just like Calgary really.

Edmonton has more elementary schools in the local community than Calgary. This is a historical issue apparently. Some time ago when you were allowed to borrow to build schools Edmonton did so - Calgary was more prudent and didnt. When difficulties arose due to the payment schedule Edmontons debt was written off leaving Edmonton with many schools and no debt. Calgary on the other hand still had no debt and few schools.

Calgary compounds the problem by retaining new communities inside the city hence affecting the funding formula for acquiring a new school. Edmonton has its 'new communities' outside the city and therefore in a different school board.

This is one reason why children in Calgary are bussed so far to schools when there is an overflow or a simple lack of school.

Don't worry this effect is caused by the inhalation of the large quantities of marijuana smoke in the province of B.C. and will disappear with the correct dose of Toronto smog..
