Hi, I know there are a number of people on here from Nova Scotia. Are any of you familiar with Truro and the surrounding area? Any comments as to what it's like as a place to live would be welcome.

Surrounding area is nice but I don't think I would like to live in Truro! It really depends on what you want to do.....Truro isn't all that big but does have lots of things there...it is an old city! What else would you like to know?

All I remember from my whistle stop visit via Truro was the Chow Family Restaurant - I've never seen anything quite like the decor - kinda chintzy and they set fire to my dinner, lus the cocktail came in a fake plastic coconut!!!

We weren't necesssarily wanting to live IN Truro, just nearby. That depends at the moment on whether my partner's job application comes off - she's Canadian, currently working here in the UK, and just applied for a job in Truro.
If she gets it she will sponsor me to move there too - and I can escape from teaching ..
Had a few searches on the net and Truro seems to have most of the basics, grocery stories, bookshop, Walmart .. and Beer Stores and Tim Hortons..
Doesn't seem to have any curry places though
It aslo seems to have this .. http://www.roadsideattractions.ca/truro.htm
What is this Canadian thing about putting large objects by the side of the road?

Truro is an "old" looking place but does have lots of up to date places to visit such as a Walmart...no I doubt you will find and Curry places there....gee we just got our first Curry restaraunt in Bridgewater and our first Walmart!! Will you be working in Truro? Really it does depend on what kind of lifestyle you want....Truro is 1 hour from Halifax Dartmouth right along a good highway!

Well that particular one has something to do with the trees but have you looked at the others on the site ..?
Seems like half the towns in Canada have a big something or other ..

We had contemplated, amongst other things buying a house big enough to do some B and B at some stage .. without being there I have no idea if anywhere close to Truro is a suitable propostion for this. As for lifestyle the main thing is not to live in a big city (27 years in Leeds is enough! Sue's had enough after 3!) and not have a job that takes over my life!
I've never been to NS - visits to Canada have been to Ontario, the Rockies and Vancouver Island - but it looks and sounds like somewhere I'd enjoy .. not as flat as SW Ontario and not as expensive as bits of BC and Vancouver Island ..
What's NS like for gardening? :-) Haven't seen much reference to it on here. Presumably the growing season is a fair bit shorter ..

Well you will see wood carvings all over the province...it seems to be the folk art thing!!! As for gardening...oh we love to garden I like the flowers but hubby does the veggies...unfortunately since we are in the woods the deer and rabbits get alot of the flowers and the veggies are fenced in....The growing season is a little slower at starting but we make up for it in the year...
I just sent you a PM....
