The true taste of Vancouver
 

The title of nursemakeyouwell's thread got me thinking. Vancouver has so many fabulous places to eat, but do we have a list of what's good, and what's good value from our own experience. Here are my starters, please feel free to add.

Japanese:

Miko Sushi on Robson Street. Mrs. JonboyE will kill to eat here, and she should know. The lunchtime bento boxes are particularly good value.

Greek:

Stepho's on Davie. One look at the lineup will tell you all you need to know. Don't eat for at least a week before you go there or you'll not even get past the starters.

Worth a drive is Cosmos on White Rock's sea front. Truly, truly excellent "homemade" style Greek cuisine.

Chinese

Where do you start? In Richmond the Kirin on No.3 and Westminster has very good dim sum, but the Sea Harbour at 3711 No.3 is even better.

Denny's on W.Broadway, opposite my office, so convenient for breakfast after the early flight from Kamloops.

Used to stand in the lineup for Stepho's every other week, then tried the one a few doors away, and found it better!!!!! Also, the Olympia at Denman and Nelson is great value.

Tried a fantastic little-known place last week, called Abigail's Pantry in Kits at 1st and Yew. "Fusion food" whatever that is supposed to be, but it is soooooo good.

Indian

I still haven't found one that really rocks but Bombay Bhel at Burnaby (4266 Hastings St.,) is definitely worth a trip, the chefs have lived in England (;) ) and they will whip up some good pakoras :)

Oh, I also liked Mauryas a lot (1643 West Broadway) - but I wasn't keen on the prices :ohmy:

If you haven't tried Anton's pasta place on the Vancouver/Burnaby border (4260 E Hastings) you haven't lived! We used to drive from Abbotsford to eat what we nicknamed the never-ending-pasta because you will eat for about 20 minutes and then look down and realise you haven't made a dent in it! Delicious!

The Cat's Meow in Granville Island is great for lunches and the Thai House (there are a couple but there's a nice quiet one on Burrard) is good for Thai.

Monsoon on Main does really interesting yummy food (their plantain fries are delish!) Also Reef (which I think is also on Main) does yummy carribean food.

If your looking to splash out a bit try Brix or Glowbal in Yaletown or Delilahs in the West End (very very good martinis and a decent set menu too!)

Damn now I'm hungry!!! :blink:

Excellent Sushi, downtown on Granville between Davie and Helmcken does the best Californa and Yam Tempura Rolls. They also do 22 pieces and Miso soup for $5.95 and do one of those loyalty cards where you get a stamp each time you go, and get a free one after 10 goes!

Why bother cooking!

I'm still looking for a curry house that will rival Bradford or Rusholme.

Been to about 6 curry houses downtown and none even come close, but they are still nice enough.

It’s funny, isn’t it? I have yet to find an Indian restaurant that serves food like almost every “Indian” does in the UK. Especially given the amount of East Indian people who live here, who presumably know what it is supposed taste like. I am beginning to suspect that the food we were served in England was a bastardized form designed specifically for the English palate – particularly pissed up groups of revelers piling out of the pubs at 11.00 pm.

Don't go downtown - thats the problem! Go to little India (think its Main and 49) and you will be spoiled for choice!!!

You mean I have to venture outside of downtown - hmmm.

If you feel really brave you might even try Scott Road in North Delta. It does, however, involve crossing the river ...

There is also an Indian restaurant on the sea front in White Rock called, imaginatively, Little India. You pay a premium for the view, but the food is pretty good. The owner and MD is Indian, but used to be a comedian on a prime time Japanese TV show. It is a strange world.

Hmmm, yes ish - it is cheap and tasty stuff, but I would like either a Brit style Indian restaurant, or something like the food I've eaten in India. :(

Only by special order,ask for Indian Style pizzas - deliciously hot and spicy.

Hons Wonton opposite Coquitlam Mall , cheap and delicious .

Pink Pearl Restaurant on 1132 East Hastings .

Nikkei Place on Kingsway and Sperling in Burnaby
The dinning room is open to the public for lunch and dinner
