Re: Travelling with cats to Alberta
Our quote was from Jets4Pets out of Leeds, West Yorkshire. They quoted:
"£559.87 for Gypsy and Pickles to Calgary from Manchester airport.
This price includes the freight charges, the flight, all the airport handling charges in the UK, fuel surcharge, war risk, security, the airline approved container and our fee.
We have based this price on one of our LC split containers which is one crate but it has a wire mesh divide down the centre, so both Gypsy and Pickles can have their own space but still be together."
I should really get some more quotes but we just got this one originally to have an idea of costs.

Is excess baggage a better way for them to fly then?

I was also wondering if anyone had any stories of travelling with their cats - who they used to transport them, if it was relatively stress free, etc.

Why on earth would you move to such a place? Toronto's extremely anal as regards laws, smoking in bars, bicyling without helmet, fertiliziling the lawn, are all nominally illegal but even Toronto doesn't have a roaming cat ban. I know most laws in Canada are ignored anyway but it sounds as if that part of Edmonton is as miserable as that bit of Ottawa where you need a permit to change your front door colour. I think I'd want to go somewhere less regulated, Switzerland perhaps.

becuase they have the best company is the world for what we specialise in...
its not illegal to have cats but just that the by law says they cannot roam free. not everyone follows the by laws and cats live happily BUT thats the laws..
no more that the current powers in the UK that allows them to hold my wife without charge for many weeks if they deem they want to becuase her name is similar to that of a bomber?

not all bombers are/were arab... much more damage and loss of life in the UK was done by british and irish people. that history isnt that old and seems easily forgotten by people chasing a new 'evil' . my wife is irish and unfortuantly comes from a family who name matches too many tick boxes for people

Re: Travelling with cats to Alberta
We brought our 2 16 year old cats with us in October and they're both fine and dandy!
Don't bother spending the hugely inflated fees to send them by pet travel agent unless you don't think you could cope with the extra luggage. We brought ours as excess baggage on our flight, so were able to pick them up at the baggage reclaim hall on getting off each flight (we had 3 flights with 3 different airlines!). In fact, as the engines shut down on landing on our 3rd flight, we could hear the critters miaowing in the luggage hold!!
Only requirement for Canada is rabies jag - we went the full distance and got pet passports, just in case ...
I booked the cats on each airline by contacting the airline first to check prices, space (airlines will only carry a certain number of animals per flight) and make booking. When we arrived at Edinburgh airport a guy from Air Transat was waiting for us at checkin to take the critters off our hands. We next saw them in baggage reclaim at Toronto. Same again for Air Canada. Bearskin Airllines - we practically had to load/unload them ourselves!!!
No regrets about bringing them - most people raised eyebrows when we said we were bringing them, but as another poster said, you wouldn't leave your kids behind!
They didn't like the cold weather/snow in Scotland and that certainly hasn't changed! They've adopted indoors as they're living space for the moment. Unfortunately back in the UK they had a catflap, so could come and go whenever, but they're currently dependent on one of us opening the door. When we get around to buying our own place ...
I have been concerned that they may end up as a kitty snack for coyote or bear - we'll wait and see in the summer .....

When I moved to the UK five years ago I had to leave my other cats behind because of quarantine and that was really difficult. Fine for them, they just stayed in their own home where I had lived with my parents and now rule the roost and live in the lap of luxury!
