Question Travel / Medical Insurance

I've been living in Canada for the past year, and am about to return to the UK. I'm going to be traveling through central America for about a month on the way home, and have been trying to find out about travel insurance.

I presume I can't take out a uk policy as the trip doesn't depart from the uk. Can I take out a policy with a Canadian insurance co, even though I'm not a Canadian?

My current policy to cover me whilst in Canada expires just after I leave, and the extension for a month is ridiculously priced - just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, or could recommend an insurer.

Thanks,
Rob
