There is a USB dongle hack available that made the PS3 region free and therefore able to play BR & DVD's from any region.

Which probably only works with firmware that's a couple of years old. Sony stopped the USB hacks a while back.

Sorry about that. Didn't realise.

Been quite some time since I used to 'play' with the PS3, Sat TV systems etc and hack them.

Getting old ! Was fun though :)

What's a PS3 and can it improve your mind?

Doesn't seem so.

It's some form of electric skullduggery that is known to hypnotise certain people into spending hours in a darkened room staring at a glowing box with flashing lights and moving objects being displayed.

You believe it improves your mind. Similar to some people believing they can play pool better after a couple too many beers in a pub.

A hefty percentage of blu-rays produced in non-A regions are region free anyway. It's actually only really North America that region locks them. I get most of my Blu-Rays from Amazon.co.uk now, region free UK disks. Much cheaper as well, including postage.

Canada is in Region A and the UK is in region B and this is the reason that many US bluray movies will not play in a UK PS3.

Whenever I buy a bluray movie I always check if it is region free. It usually depends on which studio produced it.

It doesn't seem to be just this - I have the BBC frozen planet blurays which are region free but do not play as they in 30fps and the US PS3 cannot play blurays at this frame rate.

US PS3's can play 30fps - which is what you would expect given that TV's here work off multiplies of 60hz natively. 50fps might cause you a problem, but most blu-rays should be 24fps wherever they are from, although a few are 1080/50 (maybe the BBC frozen planet one is this?)

This post explains it quite well:

Ah yes thanks Alan, I meant 50fps. The frozen planet one is 50fps, not sure why.

So can the US PS3s play 24fps without that 2:1 pulldown thing? My old UK TV had to do this as it couldn't do 1080-24, and it looked absolutely awful on panning scenes - lots of judder.

So looks like it is just the 1080-50 blurays that the US PS3 can't handle, but seems these are in the minority luckily.
