Default Thinking about it...

Ive wanted to emigrate with my family for a while now and have thought about coming to either the US or Canada, the US apparently is near impossible to get into (for some reason) and I like the natural beauty of Canada anyway, anyone got any tips for me?

Hi Steve, Welcome to BE

Have a look at Wiki...top of the page on the blue bar. Get some coffee and start reading. You'll find all the info you need on there. Anything else just ask...

Welcome to BE Steve,

Have a read of the Wiki http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Category:Canada especially this bit http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Quick_...an_Immigration

Then perhaps come back and asks some specific questions.

Snap I see Flirty beat me to it.

Me and my wife are currently care workers for people with learning difficulties and have an 18 month old child, how hard would it be for us to get a Visa, would we have to change careers completely or would our current vocation be enough?

Many thanks!

Steve

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. Canada is definitely much easier than the US! The US is notoriously difficult to get in to and you need to have very specialist skills to get a work visa for there, they just don't need foreign workers like other countries do.

As you'll have noticed from the link you were given, chances are you will need to find a job to stand any chance of getting a work visa for Canada. So as care workers you would qualify for a visa just as every other occupation as long as you can find a job - but that's the tricky bit, particularly with the recession in Canada.

If you haven't already, have a read of the Job Hunting section of the Wiki to understand how the job hunting process works in Canada (v different from the UK) and how to best go about finding work over there to get a visa. Pay particular attention to the article entitled 'Labour Shortages'.

Best of luck.

The wiki pages have a wealth of information that has been collated from from years of input on this site, and also the pathways to formal sites where that stuff may be read.

Seriously, take a good long look at those links that were given to you above, then you will know all the possible routes into Canada, and also have a better idea as to whether your particular skills are sought after.

If they are NOT, then my gut feeling is that you will have a tough time finding a way in. (but don't take that as gospel, as there may be factors I know nothing about of course)

I quickly googled "Chilcare workers Canada" on your behalf and came up with this: http://www.albertacanada.com/immigra...educators.html which might give you a starting place too. The other thing to remember, is that every province can have very different rules and regulations on almost everything, including qualifications. And if you are qualified to work in one province, it does not mean you can work elsewhere.

My you have a lot of research to do!

Welcome to BE and happy browsing.

I think this is the most crucial information one can receive when considering Canada. You should begin to approach Canada as a continent and each province as its own separate country. Each province varies so much, you can only really get accurate information when you can narrow down a particular part of Canada you hope to immigrate to.
