Things that are more expensive in Canada....

..where I live anyway.

1) Car insurance. Horrible.
2) Dairy Produce. I use organic milk and pay $3.25 a litre. I guess it EU subsidies that makes the difference.

Cant think of anything else!

What about cheese? In Ontario at least it is almost a delicacy.

Yes, cheese - included in dairy products.

Re: Things that are more expensive in Canada....

Breakfast cereals are really expensive i find. Although the cheapest place i've bought them is Walmart.

Fresh Chicken breast fillets and Lamb are extortionate (and not much lamb around, hence the price i guess). But then Beef and Pork are cheap.

Cheese, Yoghurt, Biscuits (cookies) any kind of sausage. all rediculosly expensive. I spend SO much more here on groceries than i ever did in Tescos. There aren't many cheaper alternatives to things.

Yes and car insurance here too.

Mobile phone bills - i had to go on contract whereas i had pay as you go in the UK. They're very behind here on that score.

Bread.
I dont know how conventional Mothers Pride stuff is in comparison but quality organic bread is $$$$. One local bakery, wood fired, hand made, organic etc etc - very nice bread but $6.60 a loaf!

The following are interesting. The Big Mac Index shows only the Scandinavian countries and Siwitzerland more expensive than Britain

What about taxes, chutneys, and pork pies. A chutney that cost 99P in the UK costs $4.99 here - or have I been out of the UK too long? Booze in restaurants is also a big expense here (at least it is in Ontario) as result of taxes upon taxes. When I go to Swiss Chalet and order a $10 chicken dinner for 2, I always seem to end up walking out with a bill for $60.

Is car insurance that much more or is it just that you have no "Canadian" history.

I'm curious because so many things affect your rates, most obvious is your history of claims, your driving record, whether you drive to work or not, if you live in a major city, which city etc, etc.

Mine is cheaper for a more valuable car ( with UK history )

I live in a rural place, dont drive to work, am now 50 years old, have a 9 year old car and have lived in Canada for 3 years with a clean history and pay $1650 a year - go figure. I think I was paying about one third that in the UK for a new car.

what about things like gas electric water rates, are they more or again is there a difference depending on where you live. i know obviously how big your property is etc. i live in a 4 bed terraced house here in uk and i pay about £65 each for gas and electric per month. water rates are about £25. does canada have tv licence if so how much is that? as with car insurance if you have no claims for house ins would you save on that as well or am i just hoping

There's no tv license. Most people pay for a cable service, $50 or more per month.

All alcohol is expensive in Ontario. Fuller's London Pride is $2.75 for the half liter can, Greene King Abbot Ale is slightly cheaper at $2.35. There is very little in the way of wine for less than $15 a bottle, restaurant mark up is typically 100% so a bottle that would be $5 at a US discount wine store is $30 at the table here.

Can only help a bit here. Own well so no water rates. No gas, everything electric including cooking and hot water - average monthly bill......equivalent of 30 pounds so thers a big saving. Property tax about 65 pounds a month. No TV licence , we pay about 30 pounds a month for a good package including movies etc.

Its worth remembering that the car insurance quoted here includes ALL you pay for your vehicle, none of the extra Road Tax or whatever it is called that you pay in the UK. So maybe the difference isnt that big, especially when you take gas prices into consideration.

I used to pay a fortune for car servicing in the UK. Here a lubrication service that includes comprehensive inspection plus oil and filters is $29.95. I dont know how they do it.

That's not true in Ontario, we have to have plate stickers which are directly equivalent to the road tax. It's currently about $80/year for a four cylinder car. We pay about $1500 per car per year for insurance with umpteen years of uneventful driving.

Just to compare.

Driving since 1969, age 64, live in the big city, overall clean driving record, have a fourteen year old car, 500 dollar deductible, cost me about $500 per annum (that is not a typo) and that includes the mandatory premium charged to all car owners included in annual registration. I can not complain!

Moved to Ottawa nine years ago and was shocked at what it cost. Mercifully I was only there one year.

Driving since 1964 aged 60 live in Calgary relatively clean driving record (one speeding ticket) drive a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid.

One million dollars third party liability, $500 deductible - annual premium $831, license plates an additional $70 per year.

Re: Things that are more expensive in Canada....

It be quicker to list cheaper things !, one is gas at 105c ltr, but you drive longer so it gets cancelled out.

when buying food form Sobys or alike the bacon is more fat than meat, but i have'nt tried a butchers yet !, i do miss Tescos for cheap food and beer.

you dont have to pay for a TV licence, but when you buy a new Tv the charge a $25 fee, and if they did charge like the Uk, there would be a riot as to the quality of standard tv channels.
but with all the moans aside its still a nice place to live !! just not cheap

That seems a lot more reasonable especially as you ain't driving some old wreck.

I purchased a 56lb lamb, all butchered and packaged ready for the freezer last week - total cost was $200, so that's $3.57lb. Didn't think that was a bad deal at all.

Sounds a lot - I'm in BC too, 37yrs old and drive an '07 F150. @yrs in BC, have full NCB with ICBC, and pay $300 less per year than you do for your car.

Milk, bread, baby formula, car insurance, second hand cars, mobile phones.

My car broke down last month and I could have brought a half decent car in the UK with what it cost to fix it.

Flights within Canada are also are unbelievably expensive

Overall I think life is very similar in terms of costs to the UK, when you take it all into account

Wow, that was a good deal. A whole fresh leg was $54 the other week in my local safeways. Be worth us going to BC to stock up ;)

Car insurance costs me approx 10 times here than in the UK for a less expensive vehicle.

You're also twice as likely to die in a car accident here!

Asda is something else. I bought one of their 'George' brand shirts for 3 pounds about 8 years ago and it is still going strong after much use.

Re: Things that are more expensive in Canada....

On the food front, I have done a direct comparison for last three months here in the Canada versus the previous three months in the Uk (we use Microsoft Money). I have spent less on groceries in Canada, but more on eating out so it seems to be almost exactly the same, give or take £30. The thing that frightens me now is that I have a separate category on our system for beers and wines. I don't like to see my monthy total in black and white. They used to be hidden in my general groceries category as the odd bottle or three found it's way into my trolley at Sainsburys and the costs were 'invisible' :p

Bedding and linen is more expensive, but we have found it to be better quality than Tesco, Argos etc where we got the cheap and cheerful in the UK.

Groceries more expensive, but eating out cheaper, so food budget balances out but with far less cooking!!!

Starbucks etc cheaper here, but that means that I treat myself to more lattes than I did in the UK, so probably spend more in total!

Sushi.
Rent (but we did move from London).

Utilities seem cheaper for us, we're spending about $30 per month on BC Hydro; no gas to pay for. I think the aircon and hot water are included in the rent. Car rental seems pretty cheap at about $45 per day - certainly cheaper than it would be for us to own one.

Re: Things that are more expensive in Canada....

Be careful with car hire - they get you on tax and also insurance, sp the actual price you pay is always higher than that they quote you on the website.

They are generally like RyanAir flights - the sooner you reserve a car the cheaper it is.

But, just because you have reserved a car does not guarentee that they will have one when you arrive (anyone seen that episode of Seinfeld?)

(I'm just talking about our experience in Vancouver).

That said, overall it is far cheaper for us not to own a car and jsut rent one the odd weekend we need one.

One of the benefits of having a Visa gold card when renting a car is the fact that you do not have to take the collision/loss damage insurance coverage offered by the car rental company.

Cheers
