I was a 'Systems Administrator' in the UK for a moderately sized firm.
I basically ran the whole computer network for the building.
It was a great job which I was good at and one that I greatly miss.

Seemingly in Canada I am not experienced enough to work behind a bar.

I would be interested to know what other people intend to do. Do you intend to carry on in the profession you are currently in in UK ? Do you want a completely different career. Do you want to work for yourself?
I work for Ford as an Engineer (a real one!). Currently working in the Ford Wind Tunnels - Essex. I will have to diversify somewhat when we get to Kelowna (BC) as the nearest wind tunnels are just over the border from Detroit which is a hell of a way to commute

Short term, I will be happy to find a job of any description just to bring in a bit of cash. Longer term ........ we'll see what comes our way.

The Information Technology field has evolved, and branched out in highly specialised fields. What you have now are Network Administrators (for small or big companies), Security Officers, Coders, Project Managers, or HelpDesk. If you don't find yourself in any of these fields, and still call yourself IT specialist, you are a little disillusioned.
Most IT people just say they are in IT because the rest of the population dont have a clue what they do even if they explain it in detail - its much easier just to say "something to do with computers".

we applied as skilled workers.Hubbie works as a finance manager and i'm a childbirth educator.
When we get to Calgary though I have no doubt that hubbie will end up stacking shelves and i will end up cleaning toilets - if we are lucky!!!!! (not that there is anything wrong with these occupations, i hasten to add before getting lynched)

My brother-in-law who is a Canadian is trying to get a job in Calgary in IT so he can move from Texas where he lives at the moment and can't find anything so doesn't really make me very optomistic about our job chances!!!

Kids leave school with basic keyboarding skills (word, excel, email) and if they are lucky a bit of programming. Not many of them could run a company's network, redesign a network or do the advanced planning required for the future of the business. Nor are they trained adequately to correct the whole thing when it all comes crashing to a halt.

Are you seriously suggesting someone straight out of school can take the place of someone with 15+ years of experience?

in today rapidly changing world of technology, a well educated college leaver probably has as good a chance of running a network as the bloke with 15 years in the business but who is now out touch with the newest technology…

once helped a college leaver get a job in my old, old, old company, simply because he was that much further ahead of the game than anyone else there… he totally changed the way they worked in three months

I'm a stay at home mummy until Biiiiink Jr goes to school, prior to that worked in hospital management, then in the german-speaking sector of a large forex company. Either of those fields would suit in Canada.

Mr Biiiiink is a dentist and will "convert" his degree at U of M for 2yrs to enable him to practise in Canada. He's not bitter at the expense. Much.

Perhaps thats the difference between those who did get jobs and those that are struggling. Mr G has taken vendor exams every year for as long as I can remember!

I'll just leave it to Mr G to respond to you telling him he is "out of touch". Have fun with that one......

Yes, but once he's done that...you'll be rolling in the money!

My husband is in IT - he owns a computer company in the UK and he will no doubt start up a small company over here (when he finally makes it over here, lol!!) as he loves working with his computers.

I owned a livery stables in the UK and that is also what I am planning on doing over here, along with trail-riding, hay production and rearing and selling childrens ponies.

I have been out here for over 4 months now (without hubby) and from what I have researched, I think we can live quite happily on the projected income just from the farm, so if hubby does decide to open a computer company too then I can't see that we will have to struggle too much (I hope anyway).

Our Business Plan was realistically structured so we have no reason to suspect failure.

Hi
Just to add my bit, I am qualified electrician, C&G vehicle & building, installation, ONC, HNC electronics, currently working as HVAC controls 'engineer' ( a techician in canadian terms ! ), my is wife a hairdresser,
Not going on skilled category, my wife was born in vancouver, so it will be a spouse sponsored application.
Seems that all skilled trades, naturally need re-training in Canada , to meet the local regs, ( codes ), etc.
True it does seem to be a lot of IT people talking about jobs, or lack of them, on the posts.
p.s.
we can both build computers etc,
so maybe we are self trained IT !!!
cheers
jerry

just as a matter of interest, I know of some-one in IT in Ontario, who says that since so many of the dot com businesses went bust, there's so many 'specialists' flooding the market. he's in a job he dislikes, but can't move on as there are more employees than employers at the moment.

I am a Diversional Therapist (elder and dementia therapy). Also i have qualifications and skills in marketing, customer service with a managerial background.( IT-?)

I am not sure which career path i will choose to continue with.
For me the experience of a new country and lifestyle is appealing in that i am like a new bird. Ready to take flight in any and which direction.
Also for me. I want newness. New lifestyle, new experiences. If anything i am amazed when i read of the comparison to life NOT being how it was in the *old* country. Who wants it!...LOL...i mean yes there is good and bad everywhere. I moved to Canada for love however, I love my Home-Country of Australia and that is what it always will be for me. And now Canada is becoming my home too...and WOW i am loving it. *S*

What do you do>?

As *mhhp* says ..this is an internet forum.

I am sure this forum represents a very minute group of people who are wanting to immigrate to Canada.
