Default Thanksgiving & interview

Hi there,

I have to go to Ottawa for an interview in November. I was going to travel 24th to the 29th but read somewhere that this is thanks giving time. Is this true and if so is it a problem. Whilst there Thursday to Tuesday i want to see the place i may end up living so will i be coming at the wrong time. Sorry if i sound a bit dim here but dont want to find the place all closed! Is thanksgiving just for the weekend or just the Sunday.

I can travel the weekend before (17th to 22nd) as my interview is flexible during November. Perhaps this would be better.

Thanks

I thought that Canada had already done its Thanks Giving, similar time to our Harvest Festival, the US Thanks Giving is normally the last Thursday in November.

Thanksgiving in Canada was on Monday, 8th of October. Thanksgiving in the US, as stated by the other poster, is on Thursday 18th of November. You'd only find potential issues if you were interviewing with a company that has close ties with the US, in which case they may either close or run on a smaller scale over US holidays, but since neither of these dates are the time you want to travel you should be fine.

Sorry, I just checked my dates, it's the 4th Thursday in November, so the 24th. Again though, you won't be affected unless it's a US company, and they'd only close on the Thursday if at all. You may find the airports are a little busier though.

I'm not sure that posters in the UK understand the importance of Thanksgiving (the US one, the Canadian one is easily overlooked completely). Thanksgiving is the only holiday on which the US closes. Offices, banks, shops, airports, everything closes. People go home to be with family, the US has an amazingly mobile population so the days before and after Thanksgiving are the busiest of the year for travel. Economically Canada is integrated into the US so vast numbers of people go home across the border one way or the other at the time of this holiday. If you have the choice not to travel on or around Thanksgiving take that choice, travel at a quieter time like Christmas or Spring Break.
