Default Thanksgiving in Canada :)

Anyone with stories of this special holiday,
haven't had the chance of being in canada during that time of year, must be quite special?

Yes it is indeed special.....
My first trip to Canada was over Thanksgiving in 1994.
I went to meet and spend time with a pen pal in Vancouver. (Fell in love - with Vancouver!)
It was a family gathering type day with lots of drink and chat and Turkey and Pumpkin Pie - loads of Pumpkin Pie. Had been roped into "hunting" the pumpkin in the muddy farm fields around Ladner somewhere.

Then where ever we went for the next week we had Turkey, Turkey stew, Turkey soup, Turkey sandwiches and of course everything ended with a large slice of Punkin Pie!

That year Cristmas dinner back home was ruined as I kept having flashbacks of...yes, you guessed, Pumpkin F***ing Pie.

Thankfully we are leaving for Trano after Thanksgiving, so I will have a years grace before having to deal with that particular Canadian culinary delight.

Rob.

I'd like to hear those stories too! I've been here 8 years and from what I've seen Canadian Thanksgiving isn't really a big deal especially compared to American Thanksgiving.

Ditto. It's a bank holiday, with sales.

Oh, I didn't mean for the celebration, I meant because everything's closed in Canada.

I've actually been asked by Canadians "so what do you do for Thanksgiving back in the UK?"

I was in the States for their thanksgiving and I'd never tasted Pumpkin Pie so I suggested to a business buddy that I'd like to try it so he said.

" So you want some babyshit pie?"

Never tried it since !

Thats about right. In my opinion anyway.

I think Easter is a bigger deal here than Thanksgiving is. And Christmas is probably the biggest.

Everyone here seems to celebrate Thanksgiving along with their familiies. Kids come home from college/uni and families all make the effort to come together for a special day.

Seems like all the shops etc will be closed.

We, as first generation expats, have no extended family here so will make the most of it with our kids. We are not planning our official 'landing' this weekend after all as we are not organised enough but hopefully will be heading off the following weekend instead

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

we do thanks giving my oh always asks how many this year for dinner here didnt belive that we have that many people around. than i took him home for dinner and there about 15 people around for dinner. oh doesn't like pumpkin pie so i make him cherry or apple.
but now people start hinting when is thanks giving and are you doing a big dinner this year??
i start making pie on sat night and finish around sun afternoon. same for x-mas have a friend that dosn't like x-mas pudding so asks if ill make her a pie.

but for canadians its the time of year that we get to come home from collage. see family and friends and than go off again till x-mas so its more family than anything else also it the rose bowl parade and foot ball game.

thats it from a canadian

Ever since we arrived we celebrated thanksgiving. Wanted to get into the spirit of things right away. We have a really small oven, not the typical North American type, so a turkey is a real tight squeeze. So we decided to BBQ the turkey, works fantastically well. Done in 3 hours and much nicer than in the oven.

Now I get the job at Christmas as well and it has become a sort of tradition.

We'd been in Canada for 6 weeks last Thanks Giving. Went to the Turkey Sale up in Whilster, and then to WhiteSpot for Turkey dinner, but was very disappointed that they didn't do pumpkin pie (which is actully very tastey)

I think it is all rather over rated, but a good reason for all those Canadian moms to get their kids home for a weekend, airlines and bus companies to put their prices up and all the other commericial things that happen these days.
