Default Telecoms Engineering Jobs

Hi everyone.

I recently signed up as I'm hoping to move to Canada, specifically Nova Scotia.

I currently work for BT and have a degree in telecommunications and a number of NVQS with 10 years experience and I trying to find out what companies are in Canada doing the same thing as I do over here. I'm aware of Bell Canada which seems to be the biggest, but I'm just trying to find out if there are any others which it may be worth me looking into.

Thanks.

Rob

You should be aware that NVQs are not recognized here. Apart from Bell Canada there is Rogers, Telus and Shaw. I think probably all use subcontractors sometimes as I see vans around without any of those names.

If you know anything about Satcoms and were willing to substitute Newfoundland for Nova Scotia I could suggest somewhere to send your CV. No guarantees but worth a punt.

Unfortunately most telecommunication qualifications from the UK aren't worth the paper they are written on in Canada as i was shocked to find out

In order to get my Visa i had to get a Canadian qualification which was great fun as i had to sit a Communications Cabling specialist exam of which i had no idea what would be in it nor had i ever seen a copy of the Canadian electrical code which is about twice the size of the UK one and the questions relating to it were about 80% of the exam mark.

By experience most telecom and cable companies in NS wont touch you with out it. I decided to do a Structured communication cabling course at the NSCC waterfront campus in Dartmouth. It helped me work out the subtle differences between the UK and Canada regulations and standards. It was definitely a worthwhile course which also helped as most things needed for the exam were still fresh in my mind as i did the course Monday to Friday and sat the exam on Saturday.

In order to inquire about sitting the exam you will need to contact the Provincial Chief Electrical Inspector, who i believe is still David MacLeod. You can find the info below

Hope this helps

Just to clarify for the OP, a provincial certification isn't essential - it's either a job offer or provincial certification for the FST program, so the OP could get a job offer instead.

Please contact Admin for a username change, as per Site Rule 11 you cannot use your company name/domain name as your username, thanks.

I agree with you on that one, it isn't essential if you have a job offer, but it was the way I got in. Most of the companies that I approached in NS weren't interested as I didn't have that certification, once I got certification I met the requirements for the visa that way and soon after also got a job offer which I had to turn down as I couldn't meet the time frame

Rodhullsaerial is a username i use on some of the forums I frequent, its not a business name and as far as i know its not a registered domain name. Its a bit of tongue and cheek as Rod Hull fell off his roof messing with his aerial, unfortunately dying in the process

Since i spend a lot of time on rooftops its an appropriate name since I too have on more than one occasion found myself swinging at the end of fall arrest equipment after losing my footing.
Its also not a very good name for a company by anyone's imagination as I doubt you would get much custom if your renown for falling off the roof

I work for one of the bigger fibre/communication/cable companies in the UK (Not Virmin Media) who i'm not going to name as they don't know yet that I'm going to Canada yet

Ah, ok - did think it was an odd choice! There is a company on Facebook with the name though, pointed out to me by one of my fellow mods.

I think it was a roofing company if I'm not mistaken that used the Rod Hull name

Bell alient sub a lot of there work to vista care. Frontier and PNL are eastlink affiliated. Other companies of possible interest are Dramis, 3D datacom (may be more AV), and D.W.S. Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
All are on the. Burnside, except PNL who are over in Halifax.

Oh, and Ace communications. They install for Bell or eastlink, but I can't remember which one.
