Tax and working outside Canada?

I seem to recall that if you lived in the UK but spent 180 days outside of it, then earnings could be tax free? If true is there a similar set up in Canada?
I live in Nova Scotia but may well have a position in Africa, i Am debating if its worth perusing due to the tax implications.
I would be very grateful for any simple answers regarding this situation and tax on worldwide earnings.

Note that, if you're gone long enough to not be tax resident (from ON, probably the same in NS) you're also gone long enough to fall out of the healthcare system.
