As someone who moved to Ont from NB for a job I think the moving tax is great but has a major flaw. If you move for a job you are allowed to claim the expenses incurred in selling your house and for the upkeep until sold. In our case it took us 18 months to sell. Now comes the catch. I had to rent in London as all our money was in the NB house, hubby could not get a job in London so had to move back to NB so we could cover the costs of the NB house rather than risk losing it, so we had double costs, heating, TV, phone etc.... Now if he had lived in London with me, earned the same money we would have had less expenses but we would have been able to claim a bigger tax allowance for the upkeep of the house until sold. Because he lived in the house until 3 months before it was sold and even though it was to make sure we paid our bills, we get less of a tax allowance. I know the tax move is a great help but it is annoying to lose out for such reasons. Our family was split up for over a year to ensure we didn't get into debt and lose our house. Thank god for Skype.
