Some of this should be of interest...

http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Vancouver

Surrey and Langley are mixed suburban and rural communities. Most of the suburban areas are designed on the assumption that every adult has a car. Only very recently have planners stated to design suburban communites that are walkable.

Morgan Crossing in South Surrey is one, and though it looks a bit out of the way on a map the access to Surrey, Langley and even Vancouver is quite good. The areas around Willoughby on the Surey / Langley border might also fit. White Rock is nice, of course, as is Fort Langley.

As always, come with the expectation of renting for the first year as your perception of where you want to live will almost certainly change once you see how things are on the ground.

You need to realise Surrey has a stigma for many Vancouverites. But if you can get past that it's a fine place to live. Just ignore the many haters

Also, Langley has a higher crime rate than Surrey - just something to be aware of. Fort Langley is nice though.

Fort Langley is very lovely indeed but you will pay a premnium for living there!
We live in Langley in Willoughby easy walking distance to restaurants and malls.......it is full of lots of strip malls but you still get mountain views and see eagles flying and for us we wanted cheap as rent as possible to enable saving so it's fine for a starter point!!!
We have lived here since October so not long but i'm heavily pregnant and still walk everywhere and feel safe enough to do so!!

Good Luck!!
