Summer in Canada?
 

Which areas of Canada have the best summers? I know everyone has a different opinion of this but I mean a decent length, hottish Summer. I love the snow in Winter, love the Autumn but wondered which areas also get a good Summer ie. better than the UK where Summer just seems to last for about a week and the rest of the year it is Autumn.

Ontario has wonderful summers, lovely and hot. Pobably all of Canada gets better summers than the UK even The Territories!:lol:

Great here too with temps into the 30's ...... plus it lasts longer than a few weeks :thumbsup: ~ can't wait for this one :)

Okanagan/North Thompson - roughly Kamloops south to the US border.

Regularly in the 30's, not unusual to top 40 degrees. Dry, no humidity. T-shirt and shorts from April to October.

St John's, Newfoundland. Generally summer is the third thursday in August. :rofl:

We're currently in Ottawa and it can hit the 40's, but very humid. Depends on the year for length of summer, sometimes can be early May through October, others can be June - August.

In 11 years ive never seen it in 40s here, not unless you are talking humidex, and even then its rare...

That's a cool link.

I was surprised to see that Vancouver and Victoria were both cooler than Calgary in the summer. I mean I know it rains there all the time, but even so - it's warm rain, innit? ;)

It has never officially reached 40°C in Ottawa.

The highest recorded temp is 37.8°C In July of 1944.

The warmest day since 2000 is 36.9°C in August of 2001

My MIL (bless her) lived in Duncan on the Island, she used to tell us it was a dry rain. :confused:

Interesting stuff. St John's wins the 'windiest winter' and the 'windiest summer' categories. Ahh that warming/cooling Atlantic breeze. ;)

I have spent summers in many different places in Canada and coastal BC has the best summers, imo. Very sunny, minimal rain, very warm without being overly hot, always a sea breeze to keep the air fresh, no humidity, always cools down a night and, at least in Victoria, no mosquitos or other pesty, biting insects. The sunsets aren't the greatest though...

Yet go up Island a short distance to Duncan and you have all those things except the cooling breezes and it doesn't cool off at night. ;)

The disadvantage of being a few miles inland. :(

Mosquitoes are a consideration...I'd gladly settle for a bit cooler for the sake of no mossies.

For the most part summers in Ontario are great. Sunny, warm and a little rain. You can plan outside activities, parties, barbecues etc, with more that a 90% chance it will be good weather. You can sit outside until late in the evening. Mosquitos can be a problem but there are lotions and candles to help defeat them. They are a small price to pay.

I am from Nfld but now in ON for several years. Let me tell you, the summers on the rock are not as bad as they will have you believe. It is all changed now due to global warming. The summers are hot and lovely down on the east coast but still ON has the best weather - snow, spring, summer (hot!) and fall. Enjoy it all

Oh don't get me wrong, I've lived here for 5 years now and I do appreciate summers in the mid 20's, few flies, no real humidex etc. Of course for proper weather in Nfld one needs to live on the West Coast but sadly most of us are tied to St John's for work.

There is no better place in Canada to spend the summer than sitting on the beach at middle cove or spend a lazy afternoon at Lance cove on Bell Island. Summers are short but you can spend them in Bowering park, or on Marine drive. Lots to do and so little time.

The lack of breezes in summer is balanced by the lack of wind in winter:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Even when it rains in winter the rain is usually gentle and the wind virtually non-existent. The old pop song "How gentle is the rain" is very appropriate here. I really don't miss the English wet and very windy weather;)

I think what Steve is saying is that 40 c air temp has never occurred in Ottawa....a 'real feel' temp of 40 c occurs occassionally just like -35 c wind chill temps occur in the winter.

Wasn't there a day in late July or early August 2006 with a humidex of about 45 c in Ottawa...I missed it as we were in Paris where it was about 36 c w/o the humidex and no a/c.

very true!!

I love southern Ontario summers!! Very regularly over 30 and with the humidity (I like this some dont) feels like 35-40, In the 4 years Ive been here rarely drops below 22-25 daytime high which is just a tad different from the UK and rain is fairly rare here during the summer barring a storm, most of the summer is hot and clear blue skies with a few mint storms in!! Also love interior BC summers which from my exp are the same as southern ON but without the humidity!! Im not a fan of Van weather - too much like the UK rain rain rain rain and more rain!

can't speak for anywhere else, but nice and dry in edmonton, temps seemed consistant at about 22c or so, don't remember it going much above 27-28c, big beautiful clear blue skies daily, and this went on for weeks and weeks, or certainly felt like it.

no problems with black fly, did get the mossies, but not too bad, and only when and where you would expect them and nothing the woodsman spray could not deter.

Only trouble is realistically, starts the 3rd week of june and ends last week in aug, so not exactly long.

I think Vancouver gets a bad rap as far as rain goes (although don't talk to me on a wet weekend in November). Rain here is very seasonal, lots in the winter months for sure. But summer is outstanding, often lasting well into oct. We get around 1900 hours of sunshine a year - the sunniest part of the uk gets around 1700 hours. The wettest months are nov through march, although we always seem to a get a cold front in late dec/ early jan with frigid temps and clear blue skies. Also rain in the city is snow on the slopes.

I would rather have a lot of rain in the winter and get it over with unlike the never ending drizzle of manchester.
